Department of Biology

biology lab The core focus of the SVSU Biology Department is to provide exceptional course and research experiences. The department offers an array of courses relevant to all students interested in seeking jobs and advanced degrees in the biological sciences. A wide variety of upper division biology courses is taught by full time faculty. The department provides a Suggested Course Map to help guide course selection for all students majoring in Biology. For students who have a particular area of interest, the Suggested Course Map also identifies specific recommended courses for students pursuing a molecular and cell biology emphasis, an organismal emphasis, a pre-med, pre-dent, or pre-vet track, or graduate school track. Class sizes are small and provide one-on-one interactions that allow our students to get to know their instructors and allow instructors to address individual student needs. Among undergraduate teaching institutions, SVSU boasts a strong and competitive record of providing students with first-rate undergraduate research opportunities. Students have the opportunity to work in hands-on research laboratories and in environmental fieldwork settings where they have the freedom to work on engaging and creative projects as well as potentially pursue their own research questions.
