Student Leaders Win at Model UN
|
Sixteen SVSU students practiced their leadership skills at the American Model United Nations conference in Chicago, bringing home best delegation awards for four students representing the Holy See, the central government of the Roman Catholic Church.
|
- Sandy Martin, a political science major from Midland, and Sarah Rakoczy, a political science major from Grayling, together won for their work on the General Assembly First Committee, which tackled the topics of disarmament and international security.
- Antony Souss, a criminal justice major from Marine City, was recognized for his work on the World Health Assembly. This committee covered the topics of women and children’s health, plus the health consequences of international drugs.
- Lauren Potvin, a political science major from Bay City, won for her work on General Assembly Third Committee. This committee dealt with social, humanitarian, and cultural issues. This is the second consecutive year Potvin has won this award.
|
The Holy See is also a non-voting member of the United Nations, so students being able to reach this level of recognition is impressive.
Of the 16 SVSU students attending the conference, nine represented the Democratic People’s Republic of Korea (North Korea) and the seven represented the Holy See.
AMUN is an international conference attended by colleges from all over North America and Asia. This year, 69 universities competed representing 110 countries. The annual conference was held from Nov. 23-Nov. 26.
Congratulations to all of the students for an exceptionally strong performance again some very strong universities.
