SVSU installs President George Grant Jr
|
George Grant Jr was formally installed as the fifth president of Saginaw Valley State University during an investiture ceremony on Tuesday, September 26, at 10:30 a.m. in the Malcom Field Theatre for Performing Arts. Grant assumed the office of president on Jan. 1.
Investiture, one of the oldest traditions in academia, is a formal ceremony that confers the authority of high office. It typically is held during or at the conclusion of the new president’s first year in office. SVSU is the youngest of Michigan’s public universities, having been founded in 1963; it began as a private college, Saginaw Valley College.
“I am honored to serve as SVSU’s fifth president,” said Grant. “SVSU’s mission, strategic plan and commitment to community engagement align with my values. I look forward to building on the relationships that have been established through the university’s 60 years and continuing to work with faculty, staff, students and the community to make the university the best institution it can be.”

Student-Led Cardinal Solutions' Updates Website for Midland Company
|
A Midland company has a fresh website thanks to the work of SVSU's Cardinal Solutions. Critical Environment Systems engaged Cardinal Solutions to update their website, which now reflects the company's evolving focus on "controlled environment agriculture" and work with K-12 schools.
The refined website, www.ces-healthyplaces.com, is the result of collaborative efforts led by Olivia C. Bruzewski, a communication major from Swartz Creek, and Rachael E. Miller, a graphic design major from Sterling Heights. Bruzewski worked on the sitemap and content with the guidance of Brad Herzog, associate professor of rhetoric and professional writing, while Miller focused on the site's graphic design elements under the supervision of Blake Johnson, professor of art.
Mike Fox, president of Critical Environment Systems, expressed his appreciation for the smooth collaboration, stating, "Cardinal Solutions is a valuable resource for many small businesses in our region."

Board of Control Approves Seeking Liquor License for Athletic Venues
|
The Saginaw Valley State University Board of Control approved granting the university the ability to seek a license to sell alcohol at SVSU athletic venues, during a special meeting of the Board on Monday, Sept. 25.
SVSU will introduce alcohol sales at the football game against Grand Valley State University this Saturday, Sept. 30.
Sales will be administered by Aramark, SVSU Dining Services partner, who has trained staff and extensive experience with alcohol sales at other sporting venues across the country.
Alcohol will be available for purchase at the concession stand closest to the south end zone on the home sideline, as well as at a tent located outside the north end zone. We encourage everyone to engage in responsible behavior.
In July, the State of Michigan approved legislation to allow the sale of alcoholic beverages at university athletic facilities.
