Inspiring Elementary Students Through Art and Science
|
In April 2023, under the coordination of assistant professor of biology Jonathan Lecureux, a dedicated team of undergraduate biology students and faculty led an engaging STEM day at Hemmeter Elementary in Saginaw Township. This inspiring community engagement project was made possible thanks to the generous support of the SVSU Foundation.
During the Science Plus Art Reaching Kids (SPARK) event, 60 eager 5th graders had the opportunity to delve into the fascinating world of microbes. They explored microbial art by painting with bacteria and engaged in thought-provoking discussions about various aspects of science, including infectious diseases.
The project exceeded all expectations, garnering recognition in the Saginaw Township Community Schools' newspaper. This recognition highlighted SVSU's unwavering dedication to education and active involvement within the community. Special thanks to Dr. Lecureux, STEM@SVSU and the Hemmeter SPARK Day Committee.
Dr. Lecureux will present this project at an upcoming American Society for Microbiology conference, further solidifying our commitment to advancing scientific knowledge and community engagement.

SVSU Students Battle to Support Nonprofit
|
Saginaw Valley State University students are hooked on doing good for others, so they’re continuing a 20-year fundraising contest without their traditional competitor. Battle of the Valley will pit SVSU registered student organizations in a friendly competition to raise funds for Camp Fish Tales, a year-round, barrier-free camp, conference and retreat center for people of all ages and disabilities.
Battle of the Valleys begain in 2003 as a weeklong fundraising contest between students at SVSU and Grand Valley State University, leading up to the football game between the rival schools. While GVSU students have decided not to participate in the fundraising competition, SVSU students intend to carry on the proud tradition.
Battle of the Valley activities begin Monday, September 25 and run through the week, concluding with the SVSU-GVSU football game on Saturday, September 30 at 6 p.m. at SVSU.

Inclusive Haven for Well-Being
|
In response to the tragic events at Oxford High School in November 2021, Anna Peruski and Abigail Lange, recent graduates of SVSU's BSN program, had a shared vision. They dreamed of creating a space where students could prioritize their well-being and mental health, a dream that has now become a reality on SVSU's campus. The Lot[us] Room, located in Wickes 267 and a project close to their hearts, is a testament to their commitment to fostering a supportive community.
This room has been cultivated for students, by students, to help foster emotional, mental and physical health. Amenities include books, self-help worksheets, guided meditation tools, coloring activities, journals, fidget toys, crafts, games, aromatherapy, soothing sounds, affirmation wall and more!
Peruski emphasized that the Lot[us] Room is "made for anyone and everyone," a sentiment reflected in its slogan, "Find People. Find Peace." This inclusive approach underscores the room's role as a safe haven for all students, regardless of their background or circumstances. It stands as a living tribute to the power of unity and shared determination to prioritize physical mental, and emotional health within the SVSU community.
WNEM recently highlighted the Lot[us] project.
