International Food Festival and International Education Week
|
Saginaw Valley State University will celebrate a variety of cultures represented by our international students with the International Food Festival on Tuesday, Nov. 7. SVSU Dining Services employees will prepare recipes provided by students. Countries represented include Brazil, Cameroon, Japan, Kosovo, Laos, Nigeria, Pakistan, Panama, Rwanda, South Korea and Taiwan.
The International Food Festival is part of SVSU's celebration of International Education Week November 6-10. International Education Week recognizes the benefits of international education and exchange worldwide.
The Office of International Programs has a number of events and activities scheduled throughout the week, built around the theme "World Tour":
Monday, Nov. 6 - Study Abroad Alumni Panel, 4 - 5 p.m., Curtiss Hall 100
Tuesday, Nov. 7 - International Food Festival, 11 a.m. - 1 p.m., Marketplace at Doan
Tuesday, Nov. 7 - “The Music of Brazil,” a presentation by Letícia Grützmann, assistant professor of music, 5 - 6 p.m., Curtiss Hall 100
Thursday, Nov. 9 - Study Abroad Faculty-Led Panel Discussion, 4:15 - 5:15 p.m., Curtiss Hall 100
Friday, Nov. 10 - Door Decorating Contest judging. Throughout the week, university offices are encouraged to decorate their doors for the “World Tour” theme. Judges will pass by on Friday to vote on the best-decorated door.

Past Winners Repeat Success in SVSU Public Speaking Contest
|
Preparation and passion propelled veteran competitors to the top spots in the 34th Sims Public Speaking Contest on Oct. 27.
Evangeline Cruz, a communication and Spanish major from Detroit, and Nimnan Wuyep, an international studies and communication major from Nigeria took first and second place, respectively.
For Cruz, this was the second time claiming victory in the competition, which she also won in 2021. Wuyep won the competition in 2022.
Megan Thiravong, a mechanical engineering major from Minnesota rounded out the top 3 with the topic of “Inspiring Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion in STEM.”
The other finalists included:
Xsandrie Guimba, an exercise science major from the Philippines, who presented “The Opioid Crisis in America.”
Emma Laviolette, an occupational therapy major from Lake Orion, whose topic was “Teaching Empathy in the Health Professions.”
Symone Guy, a political science major from Flint, who presented “Voting.”
The Sims Public Speaking Competition was established and is endowed by Lawrence and Linda Sims, longtime supporters of the university.

Johnson Honored for Teaching Excellence
|
Saginaw Valley State University professor J. Blake Johnson has been recognized for his leadership and excellence in the classroom. Johnson, SVSU professor of art, joins 42 other educators across the country who will be honored with the prestigious 2024 NEA Foundation Award for Teaching Excellence.
Johnson was nominated by the Michigan Education Association, which earlier this year honored him with the 2023 Distinguished Servant of Public Education Award. Johnson serves as a faculty mentor for Cardinal Solutions, which provides SVSU students with opportunities to work directly with external clients.

Dedicated Education Leaders Begin Gerstacker Program
|
The 17th cohort of pre-kindergarten through grade 12 education leaders committed to professional growth will join the Saginaw Valley State University Gerstacker Fellowship program in 2023-24.
As part of the initiative, 12 school leaders from across Michigan will participate in concentrated leadership training over one year. The group will be inducted into the program during a ceremony today at SVSU. The participants, known as Gerstacker Fellows, meet monthly. Experts in the field instruct the group on subjects such as leadership practices, organizational leadership, communication, cognitive coaching, finance, and education with a global perspective.

Piano Day to feature Pianist Amy Gustafson
|
Renowned pianist Amy E. Gustafson will appear at SVSU as both a lecturer and performer on Saturday, Nov. 18.
Gustafson will present a masterclass from 1 - 2 p.m. during SVSU’s Piano Day. At 7:30 p.m., she will perform a recital as part of the Rhea Miller Concert Series.
Piano Day is an opportunity for young musicians to display their skills and learn from experts. This year’s Piano Day is hosted by Chia-Ying Chan, an adjunct faculty member in SVSU’s department of music; guest lecturer Samuel Gingher, assistant professor of practice at Northern Arizona University; and guest artist Gustafson.
Featuring performers from junior high through college age, the student showcase begins at 10 a.m. Masterclasses and lectures will be held from 1 - 5 p.m.

Cardinal Football at Home, Other Teams on the Road
|
The Cardinals meet the Wildcats from Northern Michigan University on the gridiron in their last home game of the season. Game time is Saturday, Nov. 4 at 1 p.m. in Harvey Randall Wickes Memorial Stadium.
