SVSU Board Approves New Housing, New Sport, Hamilton Gym Improvements

During its regular meeting on Monday, Oct. 28, the Saginaw Valley State University Board of Control approved a number of initiatives that will expand and improve campus facilities and provide another athletic opportunity for students.
|
- SVSU will build new apartment-style housing for 48 residential students in its University Village complex along Pierce Road. Construction will begin in summer 2025 and be completed by summer 2026 at a projected cost of $6.3 million. SVSU will fund the project through existing capital reserves.
- SVSU will introduce women's flag football as a new varsity sport at the NCAA Division II level beginning with the 2025-26 academic year, with competition expected to begin the following year.
- The board approved spending up to $1.25 million to replace the air handling system in Hamilton Gym.

Alumni Association to Recognize Stand-Out Graduates

SVSU will honor seven alumni during the 2024 Distinguished Alumni Celebration on Thursday, Nov. 14, from 6-8 p.m. in the Curtiss Hall Banquet Rooms.
Five individuals — one graduate from each of SVSU’s academic colleges — will receive the Distinguished Alumni award:

- Georgina Wilson, of Midland, College of Education
- Kiersten Mead, of Saginaw, Crystal M. Lange College of Health & Human Services
- Ann Woys, of Belmont, California, College of Science, Engineering & Technology
- Pamela Oberski, of Burt, Scott L. Carmona College of Business

In addition, the Alumni Association will recognize Aaron Mowen with the Veteran Alumni award, and Scott Ellis will receive the GOLD (Graduate Of the Last Decade) Alumnus award.
Faculty, staff and the community are invited to celebrate these award recipients.

Men’s Basketball Hosts Exhibition Games
|
Cardinal men's basketball will host one more exhibition game before beginning regular season play.
The Cardinals will tip off against Rochester Christian University in James E. O’Neill Arena on Monday, Nov. 4. RCU is preseason ranked 4th in the Wolverine-Hoosier Athletic Conference. The Warriors return four double-digit scorers who led the team to a sixth-place finish in the final 2023-24 conference regular-season standings with a 12-10 record.
Admission is $5. SVSU is a cashless venue and enforces a clear-bag policy.

Cardinals at Home and on the Road
|
Women’s soccer hosts Ferris State at 1 p.m. on Friday, Nov. 1. On Sunday, Nov. 3, the team plays at Purdue Northwest.
Volleyball travels to the Goodman Center in Chicago to play Roosevelt University on Friday, Nov. 1.
Football hosts the annual Military Appreciation Game against Davenport University on Saturday, Nov. 2, at 1 p.m.
Men’s soccer is on the road to meet Roosevelt University at Morris Field in Arlington Heights, Illinois on Sunday, Nov. 3.
