SVSU Retirees to Serve as Grand Marshals of Homecoming
|
With a combined 74 years of service to Saginaw Valley State University, Gabe and Cathy Soto were something of an institution at SVSU. The couple — who have both retired — have been selected to serve as grand marshals of this year's homecoming festivities on Saturday, Oct. 21.
As grand marshals, Gabe and Cathy will lead the homecoming parade, which begins at 12:30 p.m. on SVSU's campus. The couple will also be honored as honorary alumni, with a plaque presentation, during the homecoming football game against Wayne State University. The game begins at 2 p.m. in Harvey Randall Wickes Memorial Stadium.
Gabe and Cathy have three sons, Gabe, Jose and Xavier.

Michigan Photographer, Historian Wins SVSU Literature Award
|
Detroit photographer and architectural historian Jeff Morrison has been awarded Saginaw Valley State University’s 2023-2024 Stuart D. and Vernice M. Gross Award for Literature for his book “Guardians of Michigan: Architectural Sculpture of the Pleasant Peninsulas.” The award is part of SVSU’s community-minded commitment to recognize exceptional publications within Michigan.
Morrison spent years exploring Michigan’s largest cities and smallest towns, researching historic architecture and using telephoto photography to capture the sculptural details hidden from the naked eye. Organized alphabetically by city, each section documents the history and design of an individual building, accompanied by beautiful photos of the building and its unique ornamentation.

Professor of Education Shares Space With Students
|
When the NASA successfully launched the Psyche spacecraft on its mission to study a metal-rich asteroid earlier this month, SVSU professor of education and space buff Anne R. Tapp couldn't contain her excitement. That enthusiasm has led Tapp to work with NASA's Jet Propulsion Laboratory as an education executive in residence. In her role, Tapp shares her love of space with students and teacher, developing educational materials for use in classrooms. For the Psyche mission, she created a "Teachable Moment", STEM lessons for educators and activities for students.
