Moot Court Students Continue to Argue and Advance; 3rd Team Qualifies for National Tournament
|
The hard-working students in Saginaw Valley State University’s undergraduate moot court program continue to stand out and earn their way to national competition as they impress others with their legal arguments.
The team of Peyton Stemmerich, a psychology major from Clinton Township, and Ethan Rose, a political science major from Ypsilanti, reaped the rewards of their many hours of preparation to reach the final four of the regional moot court tournament in Wooster, Ohio Saturday, Nov. 18 and automatically qualify for the preliminary national tournament.
The SVSU moot court team will field 3 pairs of students among the 128 teams that qualify for the national competition, as Nikolas Baker, a political science major from Standish, and Diva Patel, a cell biology, molecular biology and biomedical sciences major from Kawkawlin, won the Capital City Classic moot court competition at Capital University Law School in Columbus, Ohio the preceding weekend.
Political science majors Kennedy Kreger of Battle Creek and Jeffrey Ramsey of Greenwood will continue their arguments, as well, after finishing 17th in the nation this past January. At the regional, they were eliminated by Baker and Patel.

SVSU Receives Six-Figure Gift to Boost Scholarship Support
|
A six-figure gift from the estate of a former Saginaw Valley State University employee will benefit SVSU students who are current or past members of SVSU’s Support Staff Association or their children or grandchildren.
Douglas “Doug” Wagener, who worked more than 20 years for SVSU as a stagehand, theatre building director and electrician, passed away in April 2022. He left an estate gift of $650,000 to benefit the Gloria J. and Douglas E. Wagener Support Staff Association Endowed Scholarship at the university. The scholarship is named to honor the service and generosity of Douglas Wagener and his wife, Gloria, a 42-year employee of SVSU. The couple met at the university – then Saginaw Valley State College – and married in 1975.
Bernal Koch, Doug Wagener’s sister, presented a check to the SVSU Foundation during a reception hosted by the Foundation and the SVSU Support Staff Association. In her remarks, Koch said about the Wageners: “They had no children but understood the importance of education. The devotion Gloria had to her fellow colleagues through the work of the union and the connections she and Doug had with the students at SVSU were the reasons they created this scholarship. With this scholarship, future students will benefit from this generous endowment. Their legacy lives on!”

On Wednesday, November 8, the SVSU Osher Lifelong Learning Institute (OLLI) held its monthly meeting in the Rhea Miller Recital Hall. Prior to the presentation, OLLI members who have served in various branches of the military were honored by coming up on stage and being presented with a hat that has the OLLI and SVSU logo and the American Flag. The speaker for the presentation was John Ryder, the Executive Director of the Michigan Heroes Museum. John shared personal stories of heroism, leadership, and sacrifice that Michigan men and women faced.

Anne Tapp Honored by Students
|
Anne Tapp's TE 355 class made t-shirts to show their appreciation of her. They read "WWATD" which is (What would Anne Tapp do?) with a NASA background because of her love of astronomy.
