Cardinal Formula Racing Finishes in Top 25%
|
The Cardinal Formula Racing Team at Saginaw Valley State University has built the fastest college race car in the world twice (2008, 2014) and has placed among the top 20 teams several times at the Formula Society of Automotive Engineers Collegiate Design Series. Still, Brooks Byam, SVSU professor of mechanical engineering, described this year’s finish as the “most satisfying result” in his 25 years of serving as the team’s faculty advisor.
The SVSU team overcame several major obstacles at Michigan International Speedway to finish 31st overall among the top 120 colleges and universities from around the globe who competed May 17-20. SVSU placed ahead of schools such as the University of Wisconsin-Madison (No. 55), Duke (No. 58), and Michigan Tech (No. 62).

A Story of Hope and Healing
|
This past weekend, the Temple Theatre hosted an emotionally captivating play titled "The Family Car," written by talented SVSU alumna Glecia Wright Tatum. This heartrending production delves into the poignant journey of a family grappling with the devastating loss of their beloved teenage son. The compassionate father, a dedicated social worker, strives tirelessly to guide his family through the labyrinth of grief, even as he confronts his own battles with mental health. Amidst this challenging landscape, the resilient mother valiantly endeavors to hold her family together, even as she battles overwhelming feelings of isolation. The anguished teenage daughter, consumed by anger and withdrawal, embarks on a quest to find her identity in a world irrevocably altered by the absence of her brother.
Adding to the exceptional talent on display, Melvin C. McDowell, SVSU assistant professor of social work, breathed life into the character of Nigel, a close family friend who, after an extended absence, returns home to provide solace to the grieving family.
"Nigel was the hardest character that I have ever had to play. Glecia would call and check on me after some rehearsals because Nigel was the complete opposite of who I am and what I believe. As a mental health therapist to many people in this community, I struggled to allow Nigel to come forward," said McDowell.

SVSU partners with U.P. College to Address Critical Nursing Workforce Issue
|
Bay College, in Michigan’s Upper Peninsula, and Saginaw Valley State University have established a new partnership to expand nursing education opportunities and grow the talent pool of nurses in the U.P. and northern Michigan through a collaboration supported by a grant from the State of Michigan.
“This partnership is an exciting opportunity for Bay College and SVSU to provide expanded nursing education for students in the U.P.," said Marcia Mastracci Ditmyer, dean of SVSU's College of Health and Human Services. "We're pleased to build on Bay College's strong ADN program to educate nurses who will fill critical roles in delivering high-quality health care in their communities.”
The SVSU-Bay partnership will streamline the pathway to a bachelor's degree in nursing by empowering students in Bay College’s associate degree program to work concurrently toward a bachelor's degree from SVSU.

3-PEAT: Williamson Claims Two Titles on Day 2 of NCAA Championships
|
SVSU track and field standout Cheyenne Williamson claimed her 3rd consecutive national title in the NCAA Division II heptathlon. Her 5861-point performance not only surpasses her old school record of 5,757 points, but it also places her fourth all-time in NCAA Division II. SVSU has claimed every national title in the sport since 2019! Lauren Huebner, who has since graduated with her master’s degree in occupational therapy, claimed the honors prior to Williamson’s three-year run.
Williamson, a junior, claimed not one, but two national titles this year, as she also won the high jump competition. In addition, she earned points in the 100 meter hurdles and long jump, leading the SVSU women’s team to an 11th place finish at the national championships in Colorado.
On the men’s side, freshman Ryan Brenner earned an 8th place finish in the decathlon.
