Mobile Dental Services on Campus Wednesday, March 29

From 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. today, Great Lakes Bay Health Center and SVSU’s Student Wellness Programs are hosting the mobile dental bus in the campus courtyard. Services include dental exams, cleaning, and X-rays, if necessary. Students can pick up a registration form in the Student Affairs Office or the Campus Recreation Office. No insurance coverage is needed; walk-ins are accepted.

Nursing Students & Academic Tutors Present at National Conference
|
Two SVSU nursing majors recently presented at the 33rd Teaching Academic Survival and Success conference in Ft. Lauderdale, Florida. Shelby Czartoryski of Fort Gratiot, near Port Huron, and Ashwin Mudaliyar, an international student from India now living in Saginaw, shared information on a workshop they helped create to increase student success in four challenging courses in the nursing program.
Czartoryski and Mudaliyar worked with two other SVSU tutors, Caitlyn Garceau of Grand Blanc, who graduated with a Bachelor of Science in Nursing in December 2022, and Jenna Hine, a nursing student from Kawkawlin, to develop content for the tutoring workshops. They received support from Elaine Hunyadi, director of the Center for Academic Achievement at SVSU, as well as Elizabeth Roe, SVSU professor of nursing, and Jennifer Scott, SVSU assistant professor of nursing.

Dance Team Captures Top Spot, Heads to National Championship
|
SVSU’s Dance Team had all the right moves to capture a top spot at the recent Dance Team Union 2023 College Classic virtual competition. The team was named Division II champions in the jazz category and claimed 2nd place in hip hop and 4th in the team performance. The team will compete in the DTU College Classic National Championship, which will be held April 6-8 in Orlando.

The Flute Choir Concert will be held on Thursday, April 6, at 7:30 p.m. in Founders Hall. Doors open at 7 p.m. This event is free and open to the public.

SVSU Dow Visiting Artist Writing Workshop & Lecture
|
On Wednesday, April 5 from 1:30 to 3:30 p.m. a writing workshop will be held at the Arbury Fine Arts Center with SVSU Dow Visiting Artist Anne-Marie Oomen. Bring your pencil and paper, and work with award-winning Michigan author Anne-Marie Oomen as she leads a discussion of ekphrastic writing, a time-honored tradition of using works of art as inspiration. This event is free and open to the public.
A public lecture will also be held on Thursday, April 6 at 7:00 p.m. in the Alice & Jack Wirt Public Library, Bay City.

SVSU Students Collect Supplies for Local Elementary School
|
Students in the Roberts-Gilbertson Fellowship recently completed a service project to implement a resource closet for Clio Elementary School. It provides access to clothing, food, and hygiene products to pre-school students who may otherwise go without. The SVSU students collected donations from the SVSU community and Central Church of the Nazarene; they also purchased supplies with grant funding received from 2 SVSU granting agencies. In all, the school received 841 pieces of clothing, 996 non-perishable food items, and 179 travel-size toiletries.
The participating SVSU students are: Zakaria Abden, Kelsey Davis, Emily Jaremba, Brooke Clause and Tyler Heckroth.

Have you ever wanted to attend a comic convention? Join your fellow students on Friday, March 31, from 2 to 7 p.m. in the rotunda, TSAR, and Student Life Center for an all out extravaganza at Coop Con 2023.
Events include Uno, Squishmallows, Funko Pop Bingo, and comic book corn hole, as well as a costume contest with a Mario Kart tournament. Enjoy snacks, games, and a chance to win prizes.

High School Students Engage in Leadership Development

High school students in the Great Lakes Bay Regional Youth Leadership Institute engaged in artistic expression and leadership development during their session at SVSU Friday, March 24. The U Me Paint Experience is designed to teach the importance of right-brain and left-brain thinking in leadership and personal decision making.

Self-Defense Class This Weekend
|
University Police and Student Wellness Programs are partnering to offer a one-day comprehensive self-defense course on Sunday, April 2 from 2:30 to 5 p.m. in the Thompson Student Activities Room (TSAR). This course will teach you how to use your strengths against an assailant's mental and physical weaknesses and how to solve personal safety concerns related to fears about being attacked, street crimes, dating violence, and intimate partner violence. This event is free for all SVSU students and is part of SVSU’s recognition of Sexual Assault Awareness Month during April.

University Art Gallery Presents Kate Levy: Fate of the Machinery

Head to the University Art gallery at SVSU to see our newest exhibition by Detroit filmmaker and documentary mixed media artist Kate Levy.

The gallery has been converted to a fascinating installation that incorporates documentary film, oral interviews, data and ephemera regarding the materialism of industry, its impact on societal well-being as it becomes obsolete, and who benefits from that socioeconomic inevitability as seen through the eyes of beneficiaries and victims.
The gallery and art department will host Kate Levy on Thursday March 30 at 3 p.m.as she discusses her current installation and future projects. The discussion will be followed at 4 p.m. until 6 p.m. by a light reception where attendees can discuss with the artist the ideas of de-industrialization and capitalism presented through the installation.
This event is free and open to the public.
