The Office of Student Life would like to invite all staff and faculty to attend an open house to explore SVSU's new Esports program on Thursday, March 16 from 2 to 6:30 p.m. in Student Life SC101.
You (and your family - all kids are welcome!) are invited to tour the Esports Center, learn more about the program and co-curricular opportunities, and meet some of the student-athletes currently competing against other collegiate programs across the nation. We will even have some games available to try out if you're feeling up to the challenge.

Jazz Jam Session on Friday
|
The Department of Music along with Jazz @ SVSU, a registered student organization, are hosting a Jazz Jam Session next Friday, March 17 from 2 to 4 p.m. in Founders Hall. Jazz Jam Sessions are a way for musicians to come together and play some jazz in a more relaxed, learning environment outside of the regular ensembles. All are welcome to join in and play some tunes and even work on your improv skills.

Professor's Work Selected for Art Exhibit
|
Kinder mit Gewehren by Matthew Zivich, Professor of Art, was selected for showing in the 2023 Gilda Snowden Memorial Exhibition. Zivich's drawing, Kinder mit Gewehren, 2022, 48" x 56", oil crayon and photocopy on un-stretched canvas, will be on exhibit at the Scarab Club, Detroit from March 24 to May 6.
Kinder mit Gewehren is a part of a recent series of large-scale drawings using photo-images on paper or un-stretched canvas. The ideas behind the images were strongly influenced by artists such as Andy Warhol, Sigmar Polke, and Kerry James Marshall.

Faculty and Students Attend Annual Convention
|
The annual convention of the Michigan Academy of Science, Arts, & Letters is meeting at Andrews University on Friday, March 17. SVSU faculty and students from a wide range of disciplines, including biology, philosophy, psychology and geography will be giving talks and presenting.

Competitive Speech Team Competed at the State Championships
|
This past weekend, SVSU’S Competitive Speech Team attended the 2023 MISL State Championship where they finished in 3rd place (first time in school history!). While there were many notable performances from the team, first year member Niman Wuyep was named the 2023 State Champion in Poetry Interpretation.

Upcoming Department of Music Recitals
|
Beginning this week, the Department of Music will be hosting two student recitals. Alexandra Schultz, soprano, will sing on Monday, March 20, and Jaden McLaury, piano, will perform on Wednesday, March 22. The recitals take place at 7:30 p.m. in the Rhea Miller Recital Hall. They are free and open to the public.

Admissions is Holding a Special Event This Weekend

The Office of Admissions is welcoming high school seniors this Saturday, March 18 for “A Day in the Nest” to showcase what SVSU has to offer.
Activities include meeting with faculty, 'Next-Steps' and 'Career Readiness' presentations, campus tours, a student services fair, computer labs set up for you to complete business, and so much more!

Poetry Slam at the Museum This Friday
|
The Theodore Roethke Poetry and Arts Festival kicks off at the Marshall Fredericks Sculpture Museum Friday, March 17 with a poetry slam. There will be prizes for the top 4 poets, music from Major Chords For Minors and festive St. Patrick’s Day snacks. The event is free and open to the public. Events continue through next Wednesday, March 22.
