TRIO Students Attend Leadership Summit

Seven students from SVSU’s TRIO Student Support Services program attended the Michigan College Access Programs & Personnel Student Leadership Summit in Traverse City from Feb. 23-26. These students had the opportunity to network, attend development sessions and connect with TRIO students and staff from all of the Michigan colleges and universities. SVSU TRIO students who attended were (left to right) Trent Caulkins, Mason Kochanski, Gabby Villareal, Abby Essex, Lexis Morin, Lisa Catacosinos and Jay Hill.

On Monday, March 18, former members of Congress Bart Stupak and Vicky Hartzler discuss their time in the House of Representatives, the current Congress and the upcoming election cycle. The discussion will be moderated by Wall Street Journal reporter Ken Thomas. The event begins at 7 p.m. in the Rhea Miller Recital Hall. “Congress to Campus” is sponsored by the Henry Marsh Institute for Public Policy, Pi Sigma Alpha, SVSU College Democrats and SVSU College Republicans.

Thanks to the generosity of those who have contributed, the Cardinal Closet has provided 2,733 articles of clothing to students since it opened in September 2022.

Shelley Honored by Professional Organization
|
Charles “Pat” Shelley, international student advisor, was honored by the Michigan Association of International Educators with the Scott Cooper Award for Excellence in International Student Advising. Pat accepted the award during the MAIE conference on Thursday, March 14.
The inscription on the plaque reads: In recognition of your commitment and dedication to international education, and for your positive influence on international students and scholars.

Help Make Commencement Memorable

You can help make the commencement a memorable day for our graduates! Two commencement ceremonies will be held on Saturday, May 11. When you volunteer to help at one or both events, you will receive a free lunch and an exclusive SVSU shirt to wear at the ceremony.
If you would like to present the diploma cover to a family member, you must complete this form by Friday, May, 3.
Commencement is one of the busiest days of the year on campus, and it takes many hands to ensure that it runs smoothly and that every graduate has a great day!

Traffic Update: New Stop at Center and Pierce
|
The Saginaw County Road Commission is creating a four-way stop at the intersection of Center Road and Pierce Road beginning Tuesday, April 9. Currently, Center Road traffic does not stop.
Additional message boards and temporary supplemental signs will be installed in the area. Please anticipate an adjustment period of a week or two for drivers on Center Road to adapt to this new traffic pattern.

April 10-13: “Columbinus” The SVSU theatre department presents this play sparked by the April 1999 massacre at Columbine High School in Littleton, Colorado. Recommended for ages 16+.
Performances run Wednesday, April 10-Saturday, April 13 at 7:30 p.m.; Sunday, April 14 at 3:00 p.m.
April 10-May 4: Winter BFA Exhibitions The University Art Gallery will show off the works of SVSU's BFA candidates. Exhibition 1 takes place from Wednesday, April 10-Saturday, April 20. Exhibition 2 will be held Wednesday, April 24-Saturday, May 4.

Student-Athletes Stand Out
|
Swimming and diving is competing at the Division II championships in Geneva, Ohio, through Saturday, March 16. A program-high 11 SVSU student-athletes are competing. https://www.ncaa.com/news/swimming-men/article/2024-03-14/2024-dii-swimming-and-diving-championships-schedule-results
Baseball is off to a 10-4 start to their season including going 7-2 during their spring break trip to Missouri and Arizona. They are next in action next Tuesday when they host Northwood at 3 p.m.
Softball faced some tough competition in Florida during their spring trip, helping prepare them for the conference season ahead. The Cardinals hold a 10-7 early season record and will be in action next on the road this weekend traveling to Ohio with double headers against Findlay on Saturday (March 16) and Tiffin on Sunday (March 17).
Dominic Suliman highlighted the performances for the men’s and women’s Cardinal track and field at the DII indoor track and field championships held last weekend (March 8-9). He earned All-America honors in the mile with a sixth-place finish after a time of 4:19.93. Read more about the team’s results – day one | day two. The outdoor season begins on Saturday, March 23.
Men’s and women’s golf traveled to North Carolina to compete in Ohio Dominican Spring Break Invitational. Men took second of nine teams led by sophomore Shea Harmeson who tied for second best overall with a 142. The women took fifth led by junior Brook Herbstreit who was tied at seventh overall with a 154. The teams host the SVSU Spring Break Invite this weekend (March 16-17) at Kearney Hill Golf Links in Lexington, Kentucky.
Tennis traveled to Florida for spring break in preparation for their spring conference schedule. The women travel to the U.P March 22-23 where they face Michigan Tech and LSSU.
Men’s and women’s basketball concluded their seasons recently. The women earned the number eight seed in the conference tournament but fell short in their bid to extend the season. Two Cardinals earned All-GLIAC honors for the women including junior Aleshia Jones (second team) and sophomore Lydia Meredith (all-defensive). Four Cardinal men received conference honors. Senior Tre Garrett was named First Team All-GLIAC as well as being on the all-defensive team. Freddie McIntosh was named Second Team All-GLIAC for the second consecutive season. He was joined on the second team by Toodles Seal. Kevonne Taylor earned back-to-back GLIAC all-defensive team honors.
