SVSU Receives Federal Grant to Address Behavioral Health Care Needs in Rural Michigan
|
With a $650,000 grant from the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services, Saginaw Valley State University will collaborate with Northern Michigan University to train psychiatric mental health nurse practitioners.
Through the program — called BRIDGE UP ― SVSU will offer our psychiatric mental health nurse practitioner (PMHNP) program to NMU to expand opportunities for family nurse practitioners in the Upper Peninsula to enhance their knowledge and ability to provide mental health and addiction treatment in their communities.
The $650,000 award represents the first year's allocation of the grant, which totals $2.6 million to be distributed over four years. With this funding, 31 part-time PMHNP students annually can participate in a traineeship that reduces the cost of their education by nearly 85%.
Kathleen Schachman, the Harvey Randall Wickes Endowed Professor of Nursing and BRIDGE UP project director, said, “This project holds tremendous promise to expand access to mental health and addiction treatment for the people who need it, while also addressing the pressing need to reduce health inequities in rural Michigan.”

Preserving Veterans' Stories: SVSU Collaborates with Senator Gary Peters' Office and the Library of Congress for the Veterans History Project
|
SVSU hosted the Library of Congress’ Veterans History Project, in partnership with the office of U.S. Senator Gary Peters. Cardinal Volunteers welcomed veterans to campus and documented their accounts of their time in the military. The stories, documents and photos collected will be sent to the Library of Congress Archives for current and future historians to access the real, lived experiences of military members.
“It is an honor to be part of a project that honors and preserves the stories of veterans in our community," said Beth Alford, SVSU's director of Military Student Affairs.
Volunteers conducted 30- to 60-minute interviews with veterans, collecting stories about their service. “This has been a wonderful opportunity to give our students firsthand experience conducting oral history interviews,” said Jules Gehrke, SVSU professor of history. “Dr. John Baesler and Dr. Jennifer Stinson put together an excellent training session to prepare them for many of their first experiences with public history.”
Special thanks to the History Department and the Office of Military Student Affairs for their partnership in making this event a success for everyone involved.
