SVSU Students to Provide Financial Literacy to Middle and High School Students
|
Beginning this fall, Saginaw Valley State University students will teach area middle and high school students how to make sound financial decisions. Through the Financial Literacy Program, operated by the Dow Entrepreneurship Institute at the Scott L. Carmona College of Business, SVSU students will be trained to provide near-peer mentoring to students in participating middle and high schools in Saginaw, Bay City and Midland. Governor Gretchen Whitmer last year signed a bipartisan bill that updated Michigan’s curriculum to include a personal finance class. Jayati Ghosh, dean of the Carmona College of Business, expects SVSU students in the program to provide financial literacy education to 900 middle and high school students per academic year.

Cardinal Solutions Launches Recruitment Campaign
|
SVSU Cardinal Solutions, a group of Saginaw Valley State University students and professors, has successfully completed a recruitment campaign for the Saginaw Township Fire Department. The team, from disciplines like technical writing, business management, videography, and graphic design, created a suite of materials including a year-long social media campaign, launched in May 2023, and a seven-part video series.
"Our students demonstrated their ability to apply classroom knowledge to real-world challenges, providing practical solutions for community needs," says J. Blake Johnson, director of Cardinal Solutions. "This project proves the effective synergy between various academic disciplines."
The Saginaw Township Fire Department reported immediate positive results from the campaign. "We have a candidate in the hiring process who saw the Facebook video, used the QR code, and we interviewed him the next day," says Kevin O'Brien, assistant chief of fire prevention. "We are pleased with the results and look forward to seeing what the rest of the year brings!”
