'Best Performance' in History of Moot Court Program
|
SVSU's performance at the American Moot Court Association national preliminary tournament in Lexington, Kentucky, was the best performance in the history of the program, according to Julie Keil, professor of political science and moot court director.
Two teams qualified for the elimination rounds against very stiff competition. They were political science majors Jeffrey Ramsey, of Greenwood, and Kennedy Kreger, of Battle Creek plus Nikolas Baker, a political science major from Standish, and Diva Patel, a cell biology, molecular biology and biomedical sciences major from Kawkawlin. This is the first time in 14 years of competing that SVSU has qualified two teams for the elimination rounds. Both teams won one ballot in the elimination round, narrowly missing the chance to compete in the final round of the national tournament. SVSU fielded three of the 128 teams that qualified for nationals.
SVSU's third team, Payton Stemmerich, a psychology major from Clinton Township, and Ethan Rose, a political science major from Ypsilanti, missed making the elimination rounds by one point. Stemmerich is the first freshman from SVSU to qualify for nationals.
Head coach Amy Hendrickson, SVSU associate professor of law, and Keil accompanied the teams to Kentucky.

Two Saginaw Valley State University professors will continue to pursue their research with support from the SVSU Braun Fellowship.
Jeffrey Koperski, professor of philosophy, and A K M Monayem Mazumder, associate professor of mechanical engineering, will both receive an award of $37,500 over the next three years to support their respective research projects.
Koperski’s research project, “Physics and Free Will,” will form the basis of a new book by the same name. Through his research, Koperski intends to disprove the assertions by some physicists that free will is impossible given the “truths” of fundamental physics.
Mazumder will study how grounded electrodes affect fluid flow through a two-stage electrohydrodynamic pump. Mazumder plans to involve SVSU students in his research, allowing them to learn about experimental setup and data collection.
Established in 2005, the Braun Fellowship program was created through a $1.5 million endowment from the Saginaw-based Harvey Randall Wickes Foundation. Administered by the Saginaw Community Foundation, the program’s purpose is to recognize the exceptional accomplishments and potential of select SVSU faculty and staff. It is named in honor of Ruth and the late Ted Braun.

Faculty Receive Inaugural Field-Spicer Fellowship for Research
|
In its inaugural year, Saginaw Valley State University’s new Field-Spicer Fellowship has been awarded to two university faculty members for their respective research projects.
Meghan Baruth, professor of health science, will focus her research on increasing and improving physical activity among female students at SVSU. Gary Lange, professor of biology, will conduct his research on the health concerns of plastics pollution.
In her project, “Increasing Physical Activity Among SVSU Students,” Baruth will develop, implement and evaluate a behavioral physical activity program among female SVSU students. Her project will also assess the long-term effectiveness of the program (i.e., maintenance) on physical activity levels. This is especially important because data from the American College Health Association shows that only 40.4% of female college students engage in sufficient physical activity to reap physical and mental health benefits.
Lange will study the effects of bisphenols exposure on certain organisms and will use his learning to gain insight into the possible effects of exposure on humans. Bisphenols are chemicals used in the production of many plastics commonly in use, including water bottles, plastic food containers, water lines in plumbing, eyeglasses and more. When these chemicals enter the body, through ingestion or skin contact, they act as endocrine disruptors, mimicking hormones and contributing to the development of health disorders or disease.
