SVSU Faculty Receive Prestigious Grant to Host Summer Institute for K-12 Educators
|
English professors Natalia Knoblock and Veronika Drake have been awarded a grant of nearly $150,000 from the National Endowment for the Humanities (NEH) to develop and implement a two-week, residential summer institute for K-12 educators.
The institute, titled “Language and Linguistic Prejudice Related to Race, Ethnicity, Gender, and Identity,” aims to address the contradiction between how many people renounce discrimination related to race, ethnicity, gender and identity, but may continue to hold discriminatory beliefs about language.
The institute will take place at SVSU from July 16-28. It is open to K-12 educators from across the United States. Interested teachers can apply by clicking on the button below.
Applications will be accepted until Friday, March 3rd.

- 24/7 coverage by University Police
- An emergency alert system
- Around 300 security cameras across campus
- Building safety measures for our residence halls and academic buildings
- Access to 24-hour counseling through our Campus Mental Health and Wellness Center

Nursing Department and Board of Control Member Send Medical Supplies to Ukraine
|
When SVSU Board of Control Vice Chair Rajkumari “Raj” Wiener put out a call to help provide medical supplies that could be used for victims of the war in Ukraine, the nursing department stepped up to the plate. Our Nursing Simulation Center team, led by Jennifer Feeney, provided surplus medical supplies, in particular, supplies to treat burns and wounds such as gauze, dressing supplies, kerlix, and elastic wraps. These supplies will be added to shipping containers and sent to the Ukraine. This is just one example of how SVSU can help the people in Ukraine.

Students Spend Spring Break Making a Difference
|
SVSU Alternative Breaks (AB) trips have remained a proud student tradition representing their commitment to bettering communities since 2004. AB is a student-led program provided by SVSU’s Student Life Center offering an "alternative" to the traditional university break. The program offers opportunities for students to learn about important social issues and provide services relating to that particular issue.
Next week, a total of four causes have been identified for trips during spring break week:
|
- Exploring Resources and Support for Children with Chronic or Life-Threatening Illnesses
- Exploring the Benefits of Therapeutic Riding for Individuals with Disabilities
- Advocating for Wildlife Care and Conservation
- Advocating and Assisting Families and Children who are Experiencing Food Insecurities
|
More about these trips will be featured in future editions of SVSU Today. Safe travels to all participants.
