2024-25 Dow Professor Award Recipients

Congratulations to the recipients of the 2024-25 Dow Professor Awards!
The purpose of the award is to support the work of individual tenure-track faculty or teams of faculty for year-long pedagogical innovation projects that enhance student learning. Funded by the Herbert H. and Grace A. Dow Foundation, these projects will demonstrate the use of evidence-based practices and innovative pedagogy to address a learning need.
Nine faculty members have received awards for the 2024-2-25 academic year. Those faculty members and their projects are:

- Competency-Based Assessment, Experiential Learning, and Virtual Reality: Technological Innovation in Nursing
- Melvin C. McDowell, Jr., Assistant Professor of Social Work
- Enhancing Social Work Education through Virtual Reality: A Proposal for Integrating Amelia VR in Foundational Social Work Practice Courses
- Sherrin Frances, Professor of English
- Using Custom GPTs as Writing Tools in Entry-Level and Advanced Writing Classes

Study Abroad is hosting a virtual information session with Jen Bauer, who currently serves as a deputy at the U.S. Embassy in Sofia, Bulgaria. Ms. Bauer will discuss her experience as a foreign service officer with the U.S. Department of State and share insights into:
|
- The hiring process for becoming a foreign service officer
- Daily responsibilities and lifestyle of working in the Foreign Service
- Living and working at U.S. embassies abroad
- Representing the United States internationally
|
There will also be ample time for students to ask Ms. Bauer questions during a live Q&A portion.
The virtual session will take place Thursday, April 18, from 10:30-11:30 a.m. A Teams meeting link will be sent to all who register.

Help make commencement unforgettable for the graduates! Volunteers are still needed for both commencement ceremonies on Saturday, May 11. Volunteers play a crucial role in ensuring guests feel welcome and are seated comfortably. It's a rewarding way to be part of this momentous occasion.
Volunteers will get a shirt to wear during commencement and lunch on the day of the event. Training will be provided to those who have not volunteered before. You can sign up to volunteer at one or both ceremonies below.

Museum Chosen for Content Creation Cohort
|
The Marshall M. Fredericks Sculpture Museum was selected to participate in the Museums for Digital Learning Content Creation Cohort. Sixteen museums from around the world were chosen to participate and will spend the next four months creating digital resource kits that will be available on the Museums for Digital Learning unique web-based platform that provides K-12 educators with authentic, curated museum collection resources to inspire students. The project is supported by the Institute of Museum and Library Services with the goal to increase access to museums for all K-12 learners.

Recycle Your Eclipse Glasses
|
Now that the excitement of the solar eclipse is over, you may be wondering what to do with your eclipse glasses. Dow Gardens in Midland is collecting gently used eclipse glasses through Eclipse Glasses USA’s donation program. To make it even easier for people on campus, the College of Science, Engineering and Technology has set up a collection box in Pioneer 236. Simply drop off your eclipse glasses and someone in SET will take them to Dow Gardens. Please drop your eclipse glasses off by Thursday, April 18.

Museum Nominated for Michigan Humanities Award
|
The Marshall M. Fredericks Sculpture Museum was nominated for Outstanding Humanities Organization for the 2024 Michigan Humanities Awards! This award recognizes organizations that have made a lasting contribution to the enjoyment of public and accessible humanities programming in Michigan. All nominations were submitted by members of the public. Award recipients will be announced in mid-May.

April 10-13: “columbinus” The SVSU theatre department presents this play sparked by the April 1999 massacre at Columbine High School in Littleton, Colorado. Recommended for ages 16+.
Performances run Wednesday, April 10-Saturday, April 13, at 7:30 p.m.; Sunday, April 14, at 3:00 p.m. Tickets
April 10-May 4: Winter BFA Exhibitions The University Art Gallery will show off the works of SVSU's BFA candidates. The works of five graduating seniors will be on display from Monday, April 15-Saturday, May 4. A reception to honor the artists will be held on Thursday, April 25, from 4-6 p.m.
April 18: Velasquez Lecture: Civility Project Join NPR’s Stephen Henderson and the Detroit News’ Nolan Finley for an enlightening discussion of the role of civil political discourse in American democracy. 7 p.m., Rhea Miller Recital Hall.

Cardinals Athletics Roundup
|
Softball went 5-3 in a number of GLIAC matchups this past week helping them maintain their first-place position in the conference. Senior Emily Depew was named the GLIAC Softball Pitcher of the Week for the second consecutive week.
Tennis split their weekend home stand defeating Davenport but losing a close one against Purdue Northwest. They are now 3-1 in conference play and take the road this weekend visiting Ferris St. and GVSU.
Baseball went 4-2 this past week extending their record to 23-9 overall and currently sit on top of the GLIAC standings at 11-3. The Cardinals continue this weekend with several home games against Davenport Friday-Sunday.
Women’s golf took fourth out of 14 teams at the NC4K Classic in Ohio. Three Cardinals finished in the Top 20: sophomore Sydney Wesson (11th), junior Brook Herbstreit (15th), junior Megan Thiravong (19th).
Men’s and women’s track competed at the Golden Grizzly Invite (Oakland University) and the Spartan Invite (Michigan State) over the weekend. Several Cardinals had highlight performances earning top finishes. More at https://www.svsucardinals.com/sports/track/2023-24/releases/20240406vg98ug.
Track and Field is scheduled to travel out to the West Coast for two meets in California this week.
Men’s golf will compete this weekend in the GLIAC Championships being held at the Stoatin Brae Golf Course in Augusta, Michigan.
