Moot Court Among Top 10 in U.S.
|
Countless hours of practice and rigorous preparation have propelled Saginaw Valley State University’s moot court program into the top 10 in the nation, marking a university first and raising the bar for future competitors.
“SVSU confirmed this week that it has had its best year in the history of moot court,” said Julie Keil, SVSU professor of political science and moot court advisor since the program’s inception.
The American Moot Court Association recently released its ranking of top programs for the 2023-2024 season, which began May 1, 2023, and concluded in February. Overall, SVSU ranked ninth, finishing second in appellate brief writing and 21st in oral advocacy. SVSU placed ahead of the University of Maryland and the University of Virginia, among others.
Thirty-six SVSU students participated in moot court for the 2023-24 season. For the list of students and additional information, click the link below.

The Marshall M. Fredericks Sculpture Museum invites you to get creative with summer art camps for youth and adults.
This summer marks the 15th year for the art camp for youth. Students from age 8 to 18 become artists for a week under the instruction of highly skilled teachers. Camp sessions run Monday through Friday, 9 a.m.-3:00 p.m. in the Carl & Christina Fredericks Creative Commons (A 107). Three age-appropriate camp sessions will be held:
|
- June 24-28 – ages 8-10
- July 8-12 – ages 11-13
- July 22-26 – ages 14-18
|
In August, the Museum will offer five one-day art camp workshops for adults 18+. Each day, a different artist will lead participants in exploring a different medium. Participants can register for one workshop or for the five-day series.
|
Beginning next week, you can expect to see some construction and maintenance activity around campus.
The much-anticipated renovation of Brown Hall is set to begin Wednesday, May 8, starting with exterior projects. The interior work is scheduled to begin Wednesday, May 22.
Brown Hall, including the second-floor concourse from Wickes Hall to Zahnow Library, will be closed and inaccessible for the duration of the renovation, which is expected to be complete by fall 2025. In addition to the parking and sidewalk areas already fenced off, a portion of Wickes Circle will be used for construction.
This project includes:
|
- An addition on the northwest corner of the building
- New roof
- All new mechanical and electrical systems
- New floor plan layout
- New active learning classroom
- New labs
- New finishes and furniture throughout
|
Faculty and staff with offices in Brown Hall are being relocated to other areas of campus. Their email addresses and phone numbers will remain the same.
To see floor plans and renderings of the Brown Hall renovation, visit “Resources” in MySVSU.edu and open the Campus Facilities folder.
Housing construction projects will also be underway soon, including roof replacement on Merry Jo Brandimore House and renovations to First Year Suites D-E. During these projects, it may be necessary to find alternate walking/biking routes to avoid construction.
From mid-May through late August, major renovations will be made to the women’s basketball, soccer and volleyball locker rooms in Ryder Center. During this project, the hallway that leads directly into the volleyball and soccer locker rooms will be closed. Outside, the Ryder service lot (“skinny” lot) will be closed and the receiving area will be inaccessible. Construction workers will park in R Lot, and the lot will remain open.

Baseball Finishing Strong
|
SVSU baseball has had a standout season, clinching its first Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference regular season title since 2002. Senior Hayden Jatczak earned his third GLIAC Player of the Week honor this season. The Cardinals move to #1 in the Midwest region and rank 23rd in the NCBWA Week 12 Top 25. Baseball closes out the regular season with four games on the road against Wisconsin Parkside this weekend. The GLIAC tournament begins Thursday, May 9.
|
SVSU softball earned a share of the Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference regular-season championship for the first time in 15 years. Senior Sara Moos broke the single-season record for doubles with her 20th of the year. The former mark of 19 was set 32 years ago in 1992 and was tied once in 2018. Along with earning a fourth GLIAC Pitcher of the Week honor this season, it was no surprise that senior Emily Depew was named the conference Pitcher of the Year. Head Coach Ryan Schalk was named GLIAC Coach of the Year. Softball begins post season play at the GLIAC tournament beginning Friday, May 3, hosted by Purdue Northwest in Illinois.

The entire team had fantastic competitions over the weekend. The teams are competing this weekend in the GLIAC Outdoor Championships hosted at GVSU.
|
SVSU Tennis advanced to the second round of GLIAC Tournament but fell in a tough battle against Wayne State. Junior Adriana Barrio was listed on the First-Team All-GLIAC roster for the second consecutive season. Senior Tara Erler was an All-GLIAC Honorable Mention for the second-straight year.
