Competitive Speakers Take Top Spot
|
For the first time in history, the SVSU Competitive Speech team captured top honors at the National Forensics Association National Championship Tournament, held at Central Michigan University April 18-22. Two members of the team represented SVSU at the tournament, besting 25 other teams to place first in the President’s Division 3. This division is for schools with one to 12 entries. SVSU entered eight events with two students.
Overall, SVSU placed in the top 20 among all 51 schools entered in the tournament.
The two students who attended this tournament continued to stand out among the competition.
Evangeline Cruz, a communication and Spanish major from Detroit, and Nimnan Wuyep, an international studies and communication major from Nigeria, teamed up in the Duo Interpretation category, finishing as quarterfinalists.
In addition, Cruz was an octofinalist in both Poetry Interpretation and Prose Interpretation. Wuyep was a semifinalist in Poetry Interpretation and a quarterfinalist in Prose Interpretation.
With their showings, Cruz and Wuyep have raised the bar for SVSU’s results at the national level. In addition to being the first team to win a division at the tournament, the team made its first appearance in a semifinal round and made the most total appearances in quarterfinal and octofinal rounds.

You may have noticed an increase in walking in the SVSU campus buildings the past several weeks. Gena Guerin, assistant professor of kinesiology, implemented a four-week walking promotion as part of a pilot physical activity program under the American College of Sports Medicine Exercise is Medicine initiative.
Guerin was awarded an Exercise is Medicine-On Campus microgrant from the Barry and Linda Franklin American College of Sports Medicine to promote the program on campus. The grant funded development of signs displaying indoor walking routes in Bachand Hall/Gilbertson Hall, and the main campus building complex from the Student Center through Wickes Hall and Pioneer Hall.
From March 25 through April 18, 66 participants tracked their walking and reported their mileage, logging an impressive total of 2,967 miles. Many of the participants were recruited by Guerin’s KINE350 Exercise is Medicine students. Students communicated weekly with their walking participants and helped them stay accountable with weekly check-ins.
Guerin received support from campus partners to complete this project. Mike Pazdro, director of facilities planning and construction, provided maps of all the buildings. Kisha Osterhoff, Human Performance Laboratory coordinator, helped create the routes and a 5K course. Blake Johnson, professor of art, offered a small scholarship to graphic design students to create signs to mark the routes. Nicholas Baumgarten, a 2019 graduate working on a second bachelor’s degree, submitted the winning design.
On Thursday, April 18, SVSU hosted its first indoor 5K, with 43 student volunteers, faculty and staff taking part.
Guerin hopes to resume the indoor walking project in the fall 2024 semester.
