Saginaw Valley State University was accredited by the North Central Association as a bachelor degree-granting institution in 1970 and at the master's level in 1974. The name changed to Saginaw Valley State College in 1974 and to Saginaw Valley State University in 1987. SVSU is on the semester system with 15-week fall and winter semesters and variable length summer sessions.

Grading Systems: + and - grades were implemented in Fall 1999.

A = 4 points C = 2 points WF = Withdrawn/Failing (0 points)* DX = Original grade/Grade Exclusion
A- = 3.7 points D = 1 point P = Pass (C or better)** FX = Original grade/Grade Exclusion
B+ = 3.3 points F = 0 points N = No Grade/No Credit TR = Transfer Course
B = 3 points I = Incomplete AU = Audited Course/No Credit  
B- = 2.7 points W = Withdrawn DV = Original grade/Academic Forgiveness  
C+ = 2.3 points WP = Withdrawn/Passing* FV = Original grade/Academic Forgiveness  

 

* Prior to Fall 2017 - F and WF grades were included in the GPA calculation. The W and WP grades are not. 
** Passing grade and credit earned with 0 grade points
R = Repeat course

 

Starting Fall 2024 students can qualify for Academic Forgiveness or Grade Exclusion for previous academic semesters. Academic Forgiveness is eligible for students who have been out for 3+ years. For those students who qualify for Grade Exclusion will still have their original grade listed on transcript but will have an "X" notation and will no longer be calculated in the student's GPA. 

Course Numbers:  
000 level            = Remedial, Non-degree  
100 - 200 levels = Undergraduate Lower Division  
300 - 400 levels = Undergraduate Upper Division  
500 - 800 levels = Graduate  
900 level            = Former Graduate/Special  
   
Undergraduate Class Levels (starting 08/26/2024): Undergraduate Class Levels (prior to 08/26/2024):
Freshman     = 29 or fewer credits earned Freshman     = 30 or fewer credits earned
Sophomore  = 30 - 59 credits earned Sophomore  = 31 - 61 credits earned
Junior           = 60 - 89 credits earned Junior           = 62 - 92 credits earned
Senior          = 90 or more credits earned Senior          = 93 or more credits earned
   

Credits earned in remedial courses will not apply toward the credits required for graduation but counts towards "full load" for students receiving financial aid. 

! - the exclamation point next to a course number indicates a Communication Intensive course for use in the General Education program.

Special Notations: The Winter 2020 term contains special notations related to the COVID-19 Global Pandemic. Students were allowed to request Pass (PS)/No Credit (N) grades during this term. Credits were granted with a PS grade, but neither this nor the N grades were used in calculating a student's grade point average. Additionally, students who did not maintain good academic standing had their standing deferred during this term (noted as "Deferred" on the transcript).

Undergraduate Degree Requirements

Fall 2024 to present:

  • Minimum of 2.00 grade point average with a grade of "C" or better in all basic skills, major and minor courses. 
  • Earn a minimum of 120 credit hours (at least 30 credits must be taken at SVSU)

Fall 1973 to Summer 2024:

  • Minimum of 2.00 grade point average with a grade of "C" or better in all basic skills, major and minor courses. 
  • Earn a minimum of 124 credit hours (at least 31 credits must be taken at SVSU)

Fall 1963 to Summer 1973:

  • Minimum of 2.00 grade point average with a grade of "C" or better in all basic skills, major and minor courses. 
  • Earn a minimum of 120 credit hours (at least 30 credits must be taken at SVSU)

Graduate Degree Requirements

University Graduate Program Policies - Minimum Standards

  • A student must maintain minimum cumulative grade-point average (GPA) of 3.0 (B) on a 4.0 scale to be in good academic standing with the university. 
  • Students who fail to maintain minimum academic standards set by the graduate program in which they are enrolled, are subject to dismissal from that program.

Degree: Minimum 62 credits at SVSU with 45 credits graded on an A - F scale.

Semester Honors: The Dean's List is complied following each semester after the incomplete grade due date, for undergraduates who have at least 12 credits of 100-level or above course work graded on the A - F grade scale.

  • 3.00 before Fall 1977
  • 4.00 from Fall 1980 to present
  • 3.50 from Fall 1977 to Summer 1978
 
  • 3.40 from Fall 1978 to present
