National Restaurant Association's ServSafe Exams

As a service to our community, the Testing Center is certified to proctor the National Restaurant Association's ServSafe Food Protection Manager Certification online exam.  This test provides verification that a restaurant manager is knowledgeable regarding industry standards for the safe handling and serving of food to the public to avoid foodborne illness or cross-contamination.  Please note that the Center can only proctor the exams - not provide instruction on ServSafe course content.  Per ServSafe policy, all testers must present a physical photo ID (state ID, driver's license, passport, or military ID) on test day; electronic versions or "photos" of the original ID will not be accepted.  No exceptions can be made to this policy.

Basic Information on Testing

Content: This exam is designed to gage a food manager candidate's knowledge on topics ranging from cross-contamination to safe food storage and preparation to hazard analysis.  For a full list of topics covered in both the ServSafe Food Protection Manager course and exam, please visit the ServSafe Food Safety Management Training website.

Exam Formatting & Time Limit: The exam is computerized and is accessed through an online platform.  Examinees will have 2 hours to answer 90 multiple-choice questions.  Note: Examinees are not required to stay for the entire 2-hour period and no points are lost for completing the test early.  Candidates are allowed to revisit questions several times as there is no penalty for changing an answer.

Score & Retakes: A candidate must receive a score of 75% or higher to pass the exam.  If this score is not attained, the ServSafe Retake Policy may be utilized:

  • Candidates my take the exam twice within a 30-day period.
  • If more than 2 attempts are required, examinees must wait 60 days before they may test again.
  • No more than 4 attempts are allowed within a 12-month period.

Before scheduling an appointment, examinees must purchase their test access code by visiting the ServSafe website.  Examinees may choose to purchase a course package which includes the class content as well as the exam access code, or they may choose to purchase only the access code; however, it should be noted that Center staff are not certified as instructors for ServSafe course content.  They may only proctor the test.  Questions regarding course content should be directed to either a certified ServSafe instructor or to ServSafe, itself.

Important Information: The Testing Center is an in-seat proctoring location but can proctor online exams.  When purchasing, candidates should select a test that has "Test Center" in its title.  ServSafe does allow candidates to complete exams at home through an online proctoring company; if a candidate wishes to test at home, they should purchase an exam marked as "Online Proc" or "Online Proctor".

To ensure a certified proctor is available and that the exam materials have been obtained, appointments must be made a minimum of 24 hours before the desired test date.  Walk-ins cannot be accepted for ServSafe exams.  There is a $15 proctoring fee which is collected when the appointment is made; to register for an appointment, please click the "Schedule Your Exam" button below.  Note: Candidates should not make their appointment, however, until they have purchased their exam access code from ServSafe (see "Purchasing ServSafe Exams").

It is recommended testers arrive a minimum of 15 minutes before their exam time to ensure a smooth check-in process.  Candidates should not expect to spend this time preparing to take their exams.  All studying should be completed before entering the Testing Center.
