Substances Committee

Programs that are facilitated by the Substances Committee include:

• CHEERS to the Designated Driver
• GAMMA: Greeks Advocating for the Mature Management of Alcohol
• Alcohol Permit Trainings for students living on-campus

CHEERS to the Designated Driver

This program has been established to help increase the number of designated drivers, and decrease the number of drunk driving throughout the tri-city area.  Local bars and restaurants have partnered with the Student Wellness Programs department to host CHEERS at their establishments, and provide FREE non-alcoholic beverages to the acknowledged designated driver in a group of two or more.  The designated driver must first show their SVSU student ID and their CHEERS keychain (provided by Student Wellness Programs) in order to receive their free non-alcoholic beverage.

• Saginaw Old Town Junction

This program is a way of saying thanks for caring about the safety of your friends and community!  Please support the participating CHEERS establishments, and if your favorite place is not a member, encourage them to adopt the program.

GAMMA = Greeks Advocating for the Mature Management of Alcohol

Peer Health Education has partnered with SVSU's Fraternity & Sorority Life to provide educational meetings specific to Greek chapters pertaining primarily to alcohol education (drink sizes, medical amnesty, signs of alcohol poisoning, designated drivers, etc.).  The meetings also expand further into overall safety plans, sexual assault prevention, bystander intervention, as well as how to seek help if needed.

Who are GAMMA members?

GAMMA members are SVSU students who are current members of a Greek organization through Fraternity & Sorority Life at SVSU.  These members come from different personal and academic backgrounds, but all have the same common interest in helping to educate their brothers/sisters to ensure quality information and maximum safety among their respective chapters.
