The Saginaw Valley State University Coed Competitive Cheer made school history this weekend competing at the National Cheerleaders Association (NCA) National Championships in Daytona Beach April 11-13. For the first time in school history, SVSU captured a trophy, placing third in the 20-team D2 intermediate small coed division.
“As this season comes to a close, I have no words to describe the feeling of making school history,” commented Head Captain Jacob Franz. “The seniors leaving us this year got to leave a mark on this program that will last forever. Big things are coming for SVSU Cheerleading.”
SVSU has competed at NCA College Nationals for six seasons. The team earns their spot in the championships by attending NCA College Camp over the summer. The program operates under SVSU’s student-led club sports umbrella. Most of the budget required to fund the program and the travel involved relies on fundraising and sponsorship.
“This team is full of the most hardworking and motivated athletes,” added head co-captain Hannah McIntyre. “To see our hard work and dedication pay off is an amazing feeling.”
In addition, SVSU sent a second team to compete in the All Girls Spirit Rally, another first for SVSU. The team earned sixth place in their division.
“This was the first year that Saginaw Valley has gone to NCA Nationals with two teams competing,” added Coach Michael Dotson. That right there shows the level of athleticism and dedication our program is building. Each and every one of these team members played a crucial role in our program's success, and they did not disappoint at all! If anything, our program saw new heights this year that we didn’t even know were possible.”
