In January, 19 Saginaw Valley State University theatre students will reprise their roles as theater designers, performers and technicians when they present their production of “Burning Bluebeard” during the closing ceremony of the Kennedy Center American College Theater Festival (KCACTF) Region 3. The performance will be held at the Capitol Theatre in Flint on Saturday, Jan. 13, at 7:30 p.m. This is the first time SVSU will present a performance at the regional festival.
The Kennedy Center American College Theater Festival showcases the finest in university theater, involving 18,000 students annually from colleges and universities throughout the United States. SVSU has participated in the KCACTF since 2004.
“SVSU’s production was one of five selected for the festival,” said David Rzeszutek, SVSU professor of theatre and director of SVSU’s production of “Burning Bluebeard.” “Given the chance to share their work in front of theatrical peers from multiple states is a great honor for our students, and it will reinforce and support their education. This is a prestigious opportunity that we are all looking forward to in January.”
Rzeszutek said there will be some challenges to mounting the production in a different space. Nonetheless, he’s looking forward to the challenge.
“I’m really excited for this opportunity to work in such a beautiful theater and for our students to interact with union stagehands,” Rzeszutek said.
The KCACTF Region 3 is one of eight regional festivals that, along with the national festival in Washington, D.C., celebrate artistic excellence and recognize students through awards and scholarships. Region 3 includes Illinois, Indiana, Michigan, Wisconsin and Western Ohio. Hosted by the University of Michigan - Flint, the festival will run from Wednesday, Jan. 10 - Sunday, Jan. 14, 2024.
