The event will give special recognition to SVSU students, staff and faculty who have served or are currently serving in the U.S. Armed Forces.
The SVSU Military Affairs office and SVSU Writing Center recently held its annual Veterans Day Essay Contest with the theme “What Veterans Day means to me.” The winning student, Megan Draper, a creative writing student from Marne, Michigan, will read her essay at the event. There will also be a live performance by Encore, a registered student organization of singers, musicians and dancers.
Sergeant Major Chedrick Greene will serve as this year’s guest speaker.
A Saginaw native, Greene enlisted in the Marine Corps in July of 1993. He has been activated and mobilized in support of Operation Iraqi-Freedom-I at Camp Fox, Kuwait, and in OIF-05-07, where he conducted combat operations in north-central Fallujah, Iraq. Throughout his service, he has been awarded the Navy and Marine Corps Commendation, the Navy and Marine Corps Achievement Medal, the Combat Action Ribbon and the Military Outstanding Volunteer Service Medal. Promoted to Sergeant Major in June of 2020, he is currently posted as the Battalion Sergeant Major for Combat Logistics Battalion453 headquartered at Buckley Space Force Base in Aurora, Colorado.
Outside of the military, Greene continues his service to the community of Saginaw through his employment at the City of Saginaw Fire Department. In 2017, he was awarded the Firefighter of the Year award and has multiple lifesaving citations.
