Zach Vega

B.A., Political Science, 2017

SVSU taught me how to critically think, write well and speak clearly – skills that I now see are in high demand professionally.

Then…

As Zach explored his college options, affordability and minimizing debt were non-negotiable considerations, as was a personal priority to study abroad at least one semester. After weeks of research and contemplation, it was clear that SVSU was the best option.

In addition to offering the lowest tuition among the state-supported schools, SVSU provided Zach with two generous scholarships. The President’s Scholarship covered Zach’s tuition, and a scholarship through the Global Foundation Scholars program funded one of his two life-changing study abroad experiences. Since Zach chose to live at home, he was able to save even more money, which he put toward a second semester-long study abroad and eventually a graduate degree.

Zach spent a semester in Bilbao, Spain, as a freshman and another semester in Taipei, Taiwan during his junior year. Like many students studying abroad, he had plenty of opportunities to practice adaptability, dealing with ambiguity and developing self-awareness. “The Taiwan and Spain trips both helped me realize that I was spatially oriented.”

An inflection point came as Zach was debating how best to use his political science degree outside of law or politics. Dr. Jesse Donahue, an SVSU political science professor, handed him the famous urban planning book, “The Death and Life of Great American Cities” by Jane Jacobs. Zach realized he could have a career that fit his gifts and interests. He went on to earn a master’s in urban and regional planning from Michigan State University.

Now…

Nowadays, Zach is engaged to be married and working as a certified urban planner in Traverse City. Through Networks Northwest, a regional planning and economic development agency that serves 10 northwest Michigan counties, Zach helps small communities maximize their natural, social and economic assets to enhance the quality of life for residents and visitors.

Zach’s scholarships opened up educational and career paths that might have been closed if he’d had large tuition bills. He had the freedom to explore classes and opportunities that interested him, like studying abroad and Model UN. And without a big debt burden he has been able to take jobs that align with the work he is called to do, rather than his monthly loan payments.

“As an urban planner, I make complex data understandable to the public, facilitate discussions that lead to consensus and provide the community with action steps to implement their ideas. I would not be the public-facing professional I am today without the teachings of my professors, the round table discussions during seminars with my peers and my SVSU experiences.”

Forever…
