Javon Sutton

Cell Biology, Molecular Biology and Biomedical Sciences

If I hadn’t received scholarships, I would have been worried about paying for school and not focusing much on my studies.

Javon Sutton is on the right path.

Influenced by his aunt, a pediatric neurosurgeon, and motivated by a desire to help others, Javon decided in high school that he wanted to become a doctor. His road to medical school — and a promising career in medicine — continued at SVSU, one of the 16 colleges he was accepted to.

“I chose SVSU because of the opportunities and the scholarships,” Javon said.

Scholarship support was important to Javon, who was concerned about incurring a lot of debt during his undergraduate education. In addition to the Saginaw Valley State University Opportunity Grant, Javon has received SVSU’s University Scholarship and Public School Academy Scholarship. Academic and need-based scholarships, like the University and Opportunity Grant, are supported by gifts to the General Scholarship Fund at SVSU.

This financial support makes it possible for Javon to make the most of the opportunities SVSU offers. He is the current president of Phi Delta Epsilon, SVSU’s pre-medical fraternity, and he works as a pre-health mentor, helping guide other SVSU students. On top of his campus involvement, Javon worked as a medical scribe in Covenant HealthCare’s emergency department until April of this year, gaining a glimpse into the rigors of medicine.

“Being able to get into the Emergency Room definitely opened my eyes to the world of medicine and confirmed that medicine really something that I want to do.”

Javon is working hard in his classes, preparing to graduate this December. He will begin applying to medical schools in the summer of 2025. Thanks to the generosity of donors who support SVSU, Javon is preparing for his future — both academically and experientially — rather than worrying about tuition.

“If I hadn’t received scholarships, I would have been worried about paying for school and not focusing much on my studies. Receiving scholarships truly helped alleviate some stress. I am so thankful for the scholarships that have helped make my college experience great!”
