Investing for Better Tomorrows

Experience is the best teacher, and the Dr. Shiv K. Arora Student Investment Portfolio Fund provides senior SVSU students enrolled in Finance 308 with the opportunity to invest and manage real funds through the ups and downs of the stock market. Through this real-world experience, students gain valuable professional skills and certifications within financial management as well as important interpersonal communication, collaboration, and risk management skills.

“If students have a real amount of money to manage, they are more cautious,” said Dr. Shiv Arora, SVSU professor emeritus of marketing who devoted nearly 40 years to his SVSU career. “I believe very strongly in learning through hands-on experience.”

Key to students’ skill development are the 20 Bloomberg Terminals housed within The Richard V. Wolohan Financial Markets Lab. The lab was part of the construction of the new Scott L. Carmona College of Business (CCB) building. Only 8% of the 10,000 business schools in the world have these specialized computer stations. The terminals access real-time global financial data and news feeds as well as offer financial analysis tools that allow students to research and invest in the stock market. Invest wisely, so it seems. Initially supported by gifts from SVSU faculty and a $15,000 start-up grant from the university, the portfolio fund’s value has reached nearly $100,000 in the past decade.

Furthermore, the experience using the terminals enables students to earn Bloomberg Marketing Concepts (BMC) and Environmental Social Governance (ESG) certifications before graduation. Armed with these certifications, SVSU students not only enter a high-demand job market with a competitive edge, but also possess the skills to immediately contribute to their workplaces and their clients’ financial health and security.

In addition to the Bloomberg Terminals, the Carmona College of Business’s (CCB) impressive facilities, student-focused faculty and experiential, hands-on programs have helped the college earn impressive accreditations. The CCB is one of only 6% of business schools worldwide to be accredited by the Association to Advance Collegiate Schools of Business International (AACSB) and is among six schools in Michigan that are affiliated with the Chartered Financial Analyst (CFA) Institute. Both are prestigious associations in the business world.

Thanks to donor support, SVSU's Carmona College of Business offers innovative, hands-on experiences that prepare students to excel in the workforce. The success of the portfolio fund illustrates that an investment in SVSU students delivers measurable returns that will help create a better future.
