Debbie and Dave Schneider have a long history with SVSU. Dave, who earned his Ph.D. from Bowling Green University, has been teaching in the Communication and Theatre Department at SVSU for over 30 years. He was recognized by the National Education Association/National Council of Higher Education as Educator of the Year in 2019. In addition to his many professional presentations and publications, Dave manages the annual Sims Public Speaking Competition at SVSU, a student contest supported by an endowment created by Linda and Larry Sims of Saginaw.
Debbie, who earned her bachelor’s degree in elementary education from SVSU in 2001, was an advisor with Alpha Sigma Alpha as a student and is now a member of their alumni association, Mid-Michigan Crown Alumnae. She is a former member of the SVSU Alumni Association Board of Directors, and continues her long and distinguished professional career as a teacher at Carrollton Middle School. She recently received praise from her colleagues for helping the school adjust to their new learning platform during the pandemic, and having the flexibility to transition from teaching language arts to math to help meet the school’s needs.
Debbie and Dave spearheaded the creation of the Carrollton Community Endowed Scholarship at SVSU, setting an example of generosity with their own strong support that inspired many of Debbie’s colleagues to contribute to establishing the endowment fund. The scholarship has been assisting graduates of Carrollton High School since the 2017-2018 academic year.
