Many of our students come to SVSU with little or no financial safety net. This 2/2 for SVSU, you can help students through an unforeseen emergency, food insecurity, or upcoming interview by supporting these resources:
*total includes gifts to other donor designations
“I was panicked. I had done everything right. How could this have happened?”
Ivy Braden, ’18, student emergency funds recipient
Personal emergencies are associated with higher stress and lower academic performance and are among the top 10 reasons students drop out of college. The Student Emergency Fund assists students dealing with unexpected emergency expenses of a short-term nature. If the trend continues, requests for help will be double last year’s. Your gift will help us meet the ever-increasing number of student requests.
“Food insecurity impacts every aspect of a person’s life.”
Marie Whitehead, Cardinal Food Pantry intern
In 2022, the Cardinal Pantry distributed over 3100 pounds of food! 41% of four-year college students report experiencing food insecurity. And food-insecure students are half as likely to graduate as their peers.
Despite donations, food drives, and food bank deliveries, it’s not enough. Your gift will help the Pantry purchase hard-to-obtain items such as perishables, foods for dietary restrictions, ethnic foods, and personal care items.
“We want everybody to have an equal opportunity to look their best.”
Mikayla Wrobel, Cardinal Closet manager
The Cardinal Closet eases that burden for students by offering free, gently worn professional clothing. Since opening last September, the Cardinal Closet has had 300 visits from students.
Appropriate, well-fitting clothing boosts students’ confidence ― a game changer when they have under 90 seconds to make a good first impression. Your gift will allow the Closet to purchase needed items and sizes so that all students have an equal opportunity to shine.
During 2/2 for SVSU, gifts of all types (one-time, recurring, or SVSU employee payroll deduction) and designations can qualify for match funds and unlocking challenges.
