Font
Toolbar
font Font
The Font tool is used to determine what your text style is. Calibri is the default font in Word, while Times New Roman. There are many different fonts to choose from, and you may pick your favorite.
font_size Font Size
Font Size is how big or small your font will appear in your document. Some things you may want larger or smaller and all you have to do is highlight the section you wanted changed and choose your size.
grow_font Grow Font
Used in place of the Font Size tool, it easily will increase your font size to the next default size. It may be pressed mulitple times to increase it more than once. If you increase it too much see Shrink Font.
shrink_font Shrink Font
Shrink Font is used just like Grow Font. (Who would have guessed?) Use it to shrink the font in your document by one default size. I think just using the Font Size tool is easier. But give it a try.
change_case Change Case
I wish this tool came out years ago, it makes things a lot simpler if you forget to change the case, or make something the wrong case. It will make words all lower case, all upper case, upper case just first letter, and capitlize just the first word in sentances.
clear_format Clear Format
Clear Format is only used if you are using different Styles. Styles will be explained later on this page. When you no longer want a style in an area, just click this and it will be taken off.
Phonetic_guide Phonetic Guide
The Phonetic guide is used to phonetically spell words above the actual text. It is a great tool if you have a word in a different language.
character_border Character Border
If you want a border around your text clicking this box will do that for you. It may be a little confusing, becase the options for this tool are in the Pragraph Toolbar which will be covered later.
bold Bold
Simply put, the Bold tool will bold your text to make it appear thicker than the rest.
itilicize Italicize
When something needs to be emphasized try italicizing the text.
underline Underline
Another way to emphasize text is to underline it. Links on your document are also underlined.
strikethrough Strikethrough
Strikethrough is a good editing tool in Word. If you are not sure if you need to take a sentance or word out of your document, try putting a strikethrough format on it. This will put a horizontal line through your text, still making it readable.
low_number Subscript
Subscript is mainly used for Math and Sciene functions. It will make your text center on the bottom line of your other text.
high_number Superscript
Superscript is like Subscript, except that it centers on the top line of your text.
text_effects Text Effect

Text Effects lets you choose from pre-programmed effects for your font to make it look more flashy. It can add a shadow, reflection, glow, and an outline.
highlightHighlight
Bold, Italicize, and underline didn't emphsize what you need enough? Or something important that you want to remember in the text. Then give it a highlight! Used just like a real highlighter with many colors to choose from.
text_color Text Color
Text color is a way to change the color of your text. Black is the default color, but if you are doing something other than writing a paper for school, work, or a novel, then maybe you want a
rainbow!
character_shading Character Shading
Character Shading is a bit like the highlight tool. It shades the white behind the text but instead of a bright color, it has a light grey.
enclose_characters Enclose Characters
Never really used this tool, but doesn't mean it isn't useful! This will encolse text characters in various enclosures. (circle, square, triangle, or diamond) It is an easy way to make the copyright symbol.©

Paragraph
Toolbars
bullets Bulleted List The Bulleted List tool is used to make an indented list with bullets. Word has several options for bullets, or you may upload your own image. numbers Numbered List A numbered list is an indented list as well, but instead of bullets, it has numbers. bullet_numbers Multilevel list A multilevel List is a little more complicated than a bullet or numbered list. It a combination of bullets and numbers in their list. To get to the next level, start a new line a press the tab key.
decrease_indent Decrease Indent If a line in your document is indented to far, click this option and it will decrease your indent. increase_indent Increase Indent Bet you could figure this tool out after reading about decrease indent... YUP it will increase your indent! L_to_R Left to Right Left to Right when clicked (it is by default) starts text on the left hand side of your document. This is how English is written. Other languages may need to be started on the right instead. Unclick this box to start your text on the right side instead of left.
Asian_layout Asian Layout If you are trying to type in an Asian language, you may need this tool to format your document. I do not speak any Asian langauges, so I am not familiar with this tool. sort Sort If something is out of order in a simple list, this is an easy tool to fix it. It will put text, numbers, and dates in ascending or descending order. Great for names or To Do Lists. paragraph Show all nonprinting Characters This tool will show; you guessed it, all nonprinting Characters. Good for formatting a document, and for teachers to make sure you did not skip extra lines to add length to your document (BOO).
leftAlign Text Left
Align Left aligns your document to the left. It is selected by default in Word.
centerAlign Text Center This tool will align your text to the center of your document. right Align Text Right The Align Text Right tool will align your text.... to the right!
justified Align Text Justified And finally the align text Jusitifed will align your text Justified... Ok so this one isn't as simply explained. This alignment will space your text exactly to the space provided. The best example I can think of is newspaper columns are aligned justified. This box is aligned justified, you can see bigger spaces than normal to fit the text in the box end to end. distributed Distributed
Just like the Align justified tool, it puts extra spaces in between words to distribute the words evenly on a line.
spacing Spacing Spacing will put extra spaces between your paragraphs so that they do no appear so close together. Choose 2.0 for a document that is double spaced.
shading Shading By adding Shading to your document, it will add a chosen color to the background. button_border Button Border I told you we would get to this tool, this is the options tool for the Character Border Tool in the Font Toobar. This will let you choose which side you want your border on; top, bottom, right, left.

style

Style The Style Toolbar has a few already formatted styles to choose from that will format different headings and indents certain ways. You may also create your own style and have your own flair. Normal Style is the default selection. Be careful when using the Style Formats as it can become complicated quickly. I just like to format my document as I go along, it leaves more room for changes. Select the "Language" button
Click "Set Proof Language"

Word has a tool that will make citations for you, but I have come across numerous problems with this tool. Instead I use Son of Citation Machine. It has never failed me.
