Eligibility Requirements

SHRM Eligibility Requirements ‌

  • Applicants must show that they have worked in an HR role for more than 1,000 hours within a calendar year, which equates to 1 year of experience.
  • HR experience may be in an HR exempt or nonexempt capacity.
  • Applicants with a graduate degree (or global equivalency) in HR must currently be employed in an HR role.
  • HR experience may be classified directly, as working in an HR role, or indirectly, by consulting, educating or researching HR practices linked specifically to human resource management.
  • SHRM membership is not required.

Advancing your career. For those not seeking certification, the SHRM Learning System for SHRM-CP/SHRM-SCP course provides a comprehensive and accelerated option for professional development. Participants gain a generalist viewpoint, refresh key ideas and concepts, strengthen their understanding of core HR competencies and increase productivity.

Already certified?
SHRM's new certification path is simple and clear. As a result of your proven knowledge and skills, you are already eligible to earn the SHRM-CP or SHRM-SCP.

Simple process. No Cost.
If you have earned an existing certification (PHR®, SPHR®, GPHR®, HRBP®, HRMP®*) and are in good standing or you become certified by January 31st, 2015, you will be eligible for SHRM's new certification—at no cost-by completing the following three simple steps between January 5 and December 31, 2015:

  • Document that your current certification is in good standing.
  • Sign the Code of Ethics.
  • Complete a brief online tutorial on HR competencies.

Once you complete this process, you will earn the new SHRM credential and begin a three-year recertification cycle**.

*PHR, SPHR, GPHR, HRBP, HRMP are registered trademarks of the HR Certification Institute and are not SHRM certifications.
** You will not lose or have to give up any of your current credentials in order to obtain the new SHRM certification.

How does On Demand online education work?

The SHRM Learning System program on demand online, self-paced. That means:

  • You can register and begin your class as soon as your books arrive, at any time through your 15 week enrollment.   Once you register and pay, your books are ordered and delivered within 7 to 10 days.  You are able to log in as soon as you register and start any material you like, but we recommend that you wait for your books so you can follow along.
  • Login from anywhere — work or home.
  • You can go as rapidly or as slowly as needed within the 15 week window.  The course normally takes about 12 weeks.
  • You do not have to attend at scheduled times — you work at your pace, not the instructor’s pace.
  • You can work for one hour and then log off and come back three days later and work for another hour or two.
  • You can pick up your class right where you left off when you return.
  • This program works best, if you login and work on the program at least 10 -15 hours per week.  Do not skip weeks, the program works best when you are consistently covering the material. 
  • The instructor will check with students to see how their studies are going or if you have any questions.  Additionally, you can use the email tool to contact the instructor at any time.  The instructor will respond within 48 hours (normally 24 during the work week).

HR Certification Institute Exam Dates

For best results, schedule your certification exam for a date that is after the end of your particular class section. The next test window is (May 1 through June 30 / December through January 31).

While no single course of study guarantees success on the HR Certification Institute exams, the SHRM Learning System has effectively helped thousands of individuals prepare for certification.


Cancellation Policy: Within 24 hours of registration and you have not logged in to program yet, may receive a refund less a $150 cancellation fee and if the books are un-opened the cost of shipping to return the unopened books to the vendor of $25.  If books are opened, your refund will be reduced for the cost of books @ $545, in addition to the cancellation fee.  Once you are given access and you have signed in, you are not eligible for a refund.
