Open Forums

The Board of Control has established interview schedules for the four finalists being considered to replace President Eric Gilbertson, who is retiring from the position. The campus community is encouraged to participate in the process.

“We want to hear from faculty, staff, students, alumni, and anyone who has a vested interest in SVSU’s continued success,” said Board chair Jeff Martin. “This will be one of the most significant decisions we will make at SVSU and receiving input from all will be critical.”

Each of the finalists will take questions during an open forum in the Curtiss Hall seminar rooms. These sessions will begin each day at 4:45 p.m. (except Bachand who has been rescheduled for 9:30 a.m. Thursday, Jan. 30, due to the campus being closed on Tuesday) and last for approximately one hour; Board of Control members Scott Carmona and Jenee Velasquez will serve as moderators.

Gayle Ormiston, Wednesday, Jan. 29

Gayle Ormiston, currently the senior vice president for academic affairs and provost at Marshall University in West Virgina, is a SVSU presidential candidate.

Gayle Ormiston currently serves as the senior vice president for academic affairs and provost at Marshall University in West Virginia. He previously served as associate provost, and as chair of the philosophy department at Kent State University in Ohio. Ormiston completed bachelor’s and master’s degrees at Kent State and a Ph.D. at Purdue University.

Donald Bachand: Thursday, Jan. 30, 9:30 a.m.

Donald Bachand

Donald Bachand currently serves as the provost and vice president for academic affairs at SVSU. He joined the SVSU criminal justice faculty in 1978 and previously served as dean of the College of Arts and Behavioral Sciences. Bachand completed a bachelor’s degree at Mercy College of Detroit, a master’s degree at the University of Detroit and a Ph.D. at the University of Michigan.

Brad Hodson, currently the vice president for university advancement at Pittsburg State University in Kansas, is a SVSU presidential candidate.

Brad Hodson currently serves as the vice president for university advancement at Pittsburg State University in Kansas. He also serves as president and CEO of the Pittsburg State University Foundation. Hodson completed a bachelor’s degree at Missouri Southern State University, a master’s degree at Pittsburg State and a Ph.D. at the University of Nebraska.

Neal Weaver, currently the vice president for institutional advancement at West Texas A&M University, is a SVSU presidential candidate.

Neal Weaver currently serves as vice president for institutional advancement at West Texas A&M University. He previously served as vice president for university relations at Northeastern State University in Oklahoma. Weaver completed a bachelor’s degree at Oklahoma Panhandle State University, a master’s degree at Southeastern Oklahoma State University, and a Ph.D. at the University of Oklahoma.

Prior to the open forums, the finalists will meet with a broad representation of the SVSU community, including vice presidents, deans, and other members of the president’s staff; select student leaders; the Faculty Association; and the Support Staff Association.

Each candidate also will host a 30-minute forum for administrative/professional staff at 3:15 p.m. in the Curtiss Hall seminar rooms (Bachand rescheduled for 8:45 a.m. Thursday, Jan. 30 due to weather-related postonment).  

Those who attend any of the sessions with the candidates will have an opportunity to submit written feedback directly to the Board of Control. An online form is available at svsu.edu/presidentialsearch/feedback; comments also can be emailed to the Board at boc@svsu.edu.
