Honors for Work on Saginaw Bay Beaches

Tami Sivy

Congratulations to Tami Sivy of our chemistry department and her colleagues working on more efficient methods to ensure the public health of those who visit our region’s freshwater beaches.  The Saginaw Bay Resource, Conservation and Development Program recently presented SVSU with its Project of the Year award. This joint effort with the Bay County Health Department is a model for the value we can deliver this region when we work together with others who are committed to making this a better community.

Congratulations in Basketball; Best Wishes in Track

Congratulations to our women’s basketball coach, Jamie Pewinski, on being named the GLIAC Coach of the Year. I’m especially pleased to see her win this award at her alma mater. Congratulations, too, to men’s basketball player C.J. Turnage, who was named Freshman of the Year.  My best wishes to our three student-athletes competing at the NCAA national track and field meet this weekend: Anna Fochesato, high jump; Chantelle Fondren, one mile run, Emily Short, 3,000 meter run.

Registration Underway for Spring/Summer Courses

Students are in the process of registering for spring/summer courses. Their decisions will dictate which courses are offered and where additional sections many be needed, so please encourage them to register ASAP.

HLC Site Visit Coming Soon

Before you know it, site visitors from the Higher Learning Commission will be visiting our campus.  I can hear some of you saying, “Don, we know.  Enough, already.”  But we can’t be too well prepared for this important event.  I encourage you to take some time in the next week or two to read the 28-page Executive Summary HLC Self Study Report (6,998kB).  It’s available online at svsu.edu/hlc/2014selfstudy/.

Provost Position Posted

The search committee for the provost’s position has begun meeting to review the more than 30 applicants – and counting – and identify a short list of those interested in replacing me.

Spring Break, Entering the 'Home Stretch'

I enjoyed watching our baseball team while we were down in Florida.  I wish they would have won a few more games, but there is a long season ahead.  I was pleased to see Jay Scott from our biology faculty using his time off from teaching to work with our student-athletes. Jay could play a little bit back in the day and I’m sure our outfielders can learn a thing or two from him.

I also was pleased to see such a strong turn out for our annual “Friends in Florida” event.  Many of SVSU’s most committed supporters were present and it provides us with a valuable opportunity to express appreciation for all they have done and continue to do for SVSU.

With “spring” break behind us, I am counting on everyone to give their best to our students as we enter the home stretch of the academic year.  Keep working hard and trust that spring is just around the corner.
