The start of a new academic year results in a lot of attention – appropriately – on our new students. It also marks a beginning for the new faculty and staff who have joined us. Some 40 New faculty 2013 (48kB) have been hired in Academic Affairs, and you can find their appointments and degree information on the list. As you'll see, we recruit from across the country and beyond. Please take a moment to familiarize yourself with our new colleagues and please make them feel welcome.
It’s too soon for a final count on the total number of students enrolled for the fall term, as some are still taking advantage of late registration this week. We are working with a number of students who have encountered financial difficulty; my thanks to those staff members who have labored to help these students identify options that will allow them to remain in school. Final enrollment numbers will be available in early September, and we anticipate that we will meet our budget projections.
Our athletic teams will soon begin competing on the fields and in arenas this fall. They work hard to represent the University well, and they’re really fun to watch. The home season starts with women’s tennis Friday, Sept. 6 against Ashland. Men’s soccer opens its season at home on Sunday, Sept. 15 as we dedicate Braddock Field, named for our recently retired colleague Bob Braddock, who founded our club soccer program, among other things. Our women’s soccer and volleyball programs have their fist home matches Friday, Sept. 27. Football plays its first home game Saturday, Sept. 14; they open with a difficult road contest against Northwest Missouri State Thursday, Sept. 5. You can listen to that one on the radio on WSGW 100.5 FM or ESPN 100.9 FM.
We have a number of outstanding guest scholars coming to campus this fall for our Fall Focus lecture series. This year’s theme is “Insight • Experience • Achievement.” You can find the full schedule at svsu.edu/fallfocus, and next week, you should receive the fold-out calendar that includes information on our full schedule of arts and cultural events for the fall. One of the perks of our jobs is the opportunity to attend these events. Please take advantage of them.
It was great to see so many of you at the welcome back events and picnic last Thursday. The new year is off to a good start. Let’s keep the momentum going throughout what is sure to be an active autumn.
