Changing roles

A photo of Susan Brasseur, Kristen Willert and Joe Vogl.

I am pleased to announce some familiar faces will be taking on new roles at our university. Kristen Willert has been named director of The Conference Center at SVSU. Kristen has done a great job as associate director for some time now. Sue Brasseur previously served as director. Sue will continue her work in a new role as senior director for Events and Athletics Marketing, a position responsible for overseeing The Conference Center’s operations as well as the client development and stewardship of Athletics marketing. The latter half of these two responsibilities previously was managed by Joe Vogl, who will be stepping down as the Athletics marketing and development director. There is no need to bid adieu to our longtime friend quite yet, though. Joe will continue in his role as our men’s and women’s golf coach. I would like to thank Joe for his work developing strong community partnerships through our Athletics department, and thank both Kristen and Sue for stepping up to take on new and important challenges.

It’s almost time …

Welcome Home rock outside of Living Center North

Next week is one of my favorite times of the year, with students moving into our housing facilities. You can bet our procession of golf carts will be revved up and ready to introduce our freshmen students — along with their parents and loved ones — beginning Wednesday. It is not too late to register to help students moving in on Wednesday and Thursday from 9 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. You can still sign up. You will find it exciting and rewarding.

Those move-in dates precede a number of activities and orientation sessions aimed at introducing freshmen to our Cardinal culture and reacquainting returning students with the university. The schedule of activities planned in the coming days and weeks can be downloaded here:  Fresh Start Weekend Guide (867kB) and Welcome Weeks 2017 (71kB).

Welcoming you back

Next week, I am also looking forward to sharing with you our institution’s accomplishment during the past academic year as well as our goals for the upcoming semesters during Thursday’s Welcome Back Address at 4 p.m. in the Malcolm Field Theatre for Performing Arts. The Welcome Back Picnic in Owsley Grove will follow the address. I hope many of you are able to attend. If you have not already RSVP’d, please take a moment to do so now.

Healthcare Finance Management Association logo certified financial healthcare professional certification

In other news, I am pleased to report we will be offering a certified financial healthcare professional certification program. The certification will be available to those studying in our Master of Science in Health Administration and Leadership Program. The certification will be made available as part of an exclusive partnership with the Healthcare Finance Management Association, a national organization for healthcare finance leaders with more than 38,000 members. Thank you to everyone who helped secure this important collaboration.

What a view

A screenshot of the ABC 12 story about the library renovations

Last week, I provided construction updates regarding renovations to Zahnow Library, the food court and Starbucks. This week, you can see what those renovations look like now that construction crews have opened up the space. And, if you are not able to visit in person at this time, ABC-12 News produced a wonderful piece on the changes recently. You can watch that here: http://www.abc12.com/content/news/12-million-library-renovations-nearly-complete-at-SVSU-440825593.html

Representing you

GLBR Regional Summit 2017: SVSU received award Don Bachand is pitured with Dr. Diane Postler-Slattery, president and CEO of MidMichigan Health.

I was honored on Thursday to accept the Individual Achievement Award for Regional Impact during the 2017 Great Lakes Bay Regional Chamber Summit. The summit represents a collaboration between several chambers of commerce from across mid-Michigan, and brings together many of our outstanding community partners. While I was the recipient of this award, my work is a reflection of our entire campus’ dedication to the region. I was proud to represent everyone who makes SVSU such a respected community leader.
