Porgy and Bess at the Wharton Center (24)
Winner of the 2012 Tony Award for Best Revival Musical, Gershwin’s Porgy and Bess has hit the road with its stunning and stirring new staging. However, the immortal songs remain, including Summertime, It Ain’t Necessary, and I Got Plenty of Nothing. The New York Times calls it “A Big Hit! An indispensable ticket!” and the Associated Press said it is a “Gorgeous version of the Gershwin masterpiece.” The classic story is set in fabled Catfish Row, where beautiful Bess struggles to break free from her scandalous life, and her only rescuer is Porgy. Threatened by her past, Porgy and Bess’ relationship evolves into a deep romance that triumphs as one of the theater’s most exhilarating love stories. Prior to the 2 p.m. matinee, we will enjoy a three-course lunch at the MSU Kellogg Conference Center. Our package includes main floor seating, lunch, and motorcoach transportation from SVSU.
