Dear New SVSU Cardinals!

Welcome to Saginaw Valley State University (SVSU) and to Michigan!  We hope your travels here were safe and enjoyable, and we are happy that you are here to join us.  There are a few things we would like to tell you to better prepare you arriving to SVSU.

New student checklist:

  • Download Online Orientation Checklist: Review and prepare for orientation
  • Housing: Check-in to on-campus housing or find off campus housing
  • Orientation: August 19, 2013 – August 23, 2013

A mandatory orientation fee of $125 has been applied.

You must attend all five days of orientation or a late fee of $150 may be charged.

Location: Wickes Hall 250 (Office of International Programs) on the 2nd floor of Wickes Hall

Monday check-in time: 8:00am

Tuesday check-in time: 8:00am

Wednesday check-in time: 9:00am

Thursday check-in time: 10:00am

Friday check-in time: 11:00am

  • Documents to bring on the first day of orientation:

1. Passport    

2. I-94

3. (I-20 or DS-2019)    

4. TOEFL/IELTS results    

5. Health Card  (if you have one)    


Documents will be collected, photocopied and returned on Friday (after the TB test reading)


Meals during orientation:

Breakfast will be provided all week (Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday, Thursday, and Friday)

Lunch: Monday and Friday only

BBQ Welcome party: Thursday from 10:30am-3:00pm


During orientation, we will help you with the following:

Course registration, banking, obtaining a student ID card, getting your e-mail address, health insurance, housing questions, immigration questions, English placement and basic skills testing and any other questions, immigration questions, English placement and basic skills testing and any other questions



  • Degree Program: On Wednesday, 8/20/13, you will register for your classes based on the results of your placement test.
  • English Language Program: We will register for your classes based on the results of your placement test.


Payment: You will pay for tuition and fees at the cashier.  Money must be in your checking account or wired to the university (credit card options + 2.9% fee).


Bookstore: The OIP and bookstore staff will help you find you books for class on Friday, August 23, 2013.


Transportation: There will be shopping trips scheduled during orientation week.

After classes start, there are weekly shopping trips to Meijer:

Wednesday evenings: 10:15 p.m.

Sunday afternoons: 3:00 p.m.

Pickup location: The ISA’s will use our university van to pick you up.
