Student Learning Goals

Goal 1: Oral Communication

Interim goals:

By the end of the courses listed below, 70% of students should demonstrate speaking and listening proficiency at the following levels on the ACTFL scale:

MFL 111: Novice Mid or above

MFL 112: Novice High or above

MFL 211: Intermediate Low or above

MFL 212: Intermediate Mid or above

 

End-of-program goals:

At the end of major and minor programs, students should have attained speaking and listening proficiency at ACTFL’s (American Council on the Teaching of Foreign Languages) Advanced Low level.

 

Goal 2: Written Communication

Interim goals:

By the end of the courses listed below, 70% of students should demonstrate reading and writing proficiency at the following levels on the ACTFL scale:

MFL 111: Novice Mid or above

MFL 112: Novice High or above

MFL 211: Intermediate Low or above

MFL 212: Intermediate Mid or above

 

End-of-program goals:

At the end of major and minor programs, students should have attained reading and writing proficiency at ACTFL (American Council on the Teaching of Foreign Languages) Advanced Low level.

 

Goal 3: Cultural Knowledge

Interim goals:

Mean student grades on embedded assessments of cultural knowledge in MFL 111-212 should exceed 80%.

 

End-of-program goals:

At the end of major and minor programs, students should be acquainted with the attitudes, values, customs, history, geography, literature, current events and everyday life of people in countries where the target language is spoken. Students should have attained a level of cultural competence that allows them to behave in culturally appropriate ways in everyday situations in the target culture(s).

 

Additional goal for teacher education programs:

Goal 4: Foreign Language Teaching Knowledge

Interim goal:

Mean grades of at least 80% on the portfolio of lessons students prepare for MFL 466, Secondary Foreign Language Teaching Methods.

End-of-program goal:

70% pass rate on the Language Acquisition, Instruction, and Assessment section of the MTTC subject tests.

 

Accrediting/Certifying Body: CAEP; Michigan Department of Education (for teacher certification)

Professional Organizations/Standards that informed development of learning outcomes: ACTFL (American Council on the Teaching of Foreign Languages)
