Student Opportunities

At SVSU, classroom learning is only part of a student's education. Experiencing real-life situations; sharing knowledge, leadership and skills; and demonstrating technical competencies are part of what it means to meet the expectations of a medical laboratory scientist. These experiences are further supplemented through clinical placements, student clubs and organizations, and more, giving our students an advantage before they enter the workplace.

Each year, the SVSU MLS senior class attends the annual conference of the American Society of Clinical Laboratory Science-Michigan. Educational sessions throughout the three-day conference help further prepare them for the BOC MLS certification exam. Additionally, students network with laboratory professionals, vendors, and students from all over the State of Michigan. In 2013, 2017, 2019, and 2021 the MLS students received financial support from the SVSU Foundation Resource Grant Program to attend the conference.

Student Organization

The Medical Laboratory Science Organization is available to all students interested in laboratory professions.  The purpose of the organization is:

    1. To promote the Medical Laboratory Science (MLS) profession throughout SVSU and the community.
    2. To practice and demonstrate the professionalism required of a Medical Laboratory Scientist.
    3. To raise funds for educational activities relevant to MLS, such as attendance at the ASCLS-MI State conference for senior MLS students.

For more information about the MLS organization, please contact the organization president, Casey Baranski at cfbarans@svsu.edu or the advisor, Margot Alvey at mmlondon@svsu.edu.
