Kristin Meyers is a graduate from the Marketing Program at SVSU. She currently works for the Mississippi Sea Wolves Hockey Team of the East Coast Hockey League in Biloxi, Mississippi where she is an Account Manager & the Director of Game Operations. Kristin was extremely fortunate to land such a job right out of school. “I love working in sports and to land what I consider a "dream job" right of college is not an easy thing to do. I feel that the experience I gained while living, working, and attending classes at SVSU is why I have been as fortunate as I have been in my post-collegiate career.”
The small class size is a great advantage to the university, and is why many, like Kristin, choose SVSU. “SVSU provided me with the small class sizes that I wanted to enhance my education. The location also kept me close to home but far enough away to have my independence.” Somewhere along the way, Kristin decided marketing was the avenue she wanted to pursue. The Marketing Program is part of The College of Business and Management. “The College of Business & Management is more of a family than just a department title. The faculty and students work together so that the department continues to adapt to meet the needs of all students.”
Helpful classes are an intricate part of any education and Kristin was pleased with all of hers. “All my marketing classes were particularly helpful in gaining the experience I needed for the "real world." Working to help local businesses improve their marketing strategies, advertising methods and customer relationships made class a worthwhile adventure instead of the conventional lecture only class.”
When questioned on the faculty within the College of Business and Management, Kristin speaks highly of one man in particular that has helped shape the way she views marketing. “I credit Dr. Gary L. Clark with a majority of the skills that I developed while taking classes at SVSU. Dr. Clark's unorthodox but effective methods of teaching demanded the best not only from me, but from all his students. I feel without the real world projects he obtained for our classes, I would not be where I am today.”
The College of Business and Management has internships in every program and Marketing is no exception. Kristin was lucky enough to land a superb internship that was extremely beneficial to her. “I was an intern for the Saginaw Spirit in 2003-2004 and was then hired as a part time staff member for the following three seasons. I feel that my intern experience was the reason I was hired right out of school in the sports industry.” Kristin also had the opportunity to work on campus, which helped her be a part of more than just classes. “I worked in the Ryder Center in both the Equipment Room and Fitness Center. Working at Ryder helped me meet more people on campus in my first semester and I loved every minute of it. I highly recommend working on campus to any student as the experience is priceless.”
