On-Campus Professional Development Opportunities

There is a rich array of instructional technology, software development and course design training available from various SVSU departments and staff.

Course Design & Development/VSpace Training

The VSpace office offers a full range of VSpace training, from beginning to advanced levels. Training can be obtained in-person via workshops or one-on-one sessions, or may be completed online.

Software Development & Training

The Instructional Technology Development Lab (C154) and the Student Technology Center (library, 2nd fl.) can assist in a variety of capacities to enhance your online teaching skills.

The software utilized for such projects are cross-platform and multi-browser compliant. For training or assistance, call the ITD Lab, 989-964-7471 or the Student Technology Center (989.964.2299) for the following:

• Create, edit, and publish streaming video clips for use in the course
• Create audio / video podcasts of course lecture content
• Assist in digitization of traditional materials for web delivery
• Learn to integrate images into various media for enhanced content/presentation
• In-classroom workshops on using software to complete student projects (i.e.: PowerPoint, Publisher, Web pages, etc.)
• Advanced word processing (mail merge, document templates, track changes, commenting)
• Use spreadsheet technology and formulas (enhanced grade book presentation/display)
• Create multimedia tutorials (and "screencasts") on specific topics/software)
• Add voiceover audio to visual demonstrations of screen-based applications

Online Library Resource Assistance

Internet librarian staff are available to assist faculty with several aspects of online course delivery:

• Linking to database resources/articles from your online course
• Adding a library reference discussion forum to your course to assist students

Additionally, SVSU recommends the Quality Matters project to faculty seeking a guide or rubric for creating quality online courses.

Quality Matters - Quality Online Course Design Guidance

The Quality Matters program created an inter-institutional continuous improvement model for assessing and assuring the quality of online courses.

QM identified 40 elements, distributed across eight broad standards and based on research literature and national standards, shown to positively impact student learning. These elements were then incorporated into a rubric and weighted from 1 (important) to 3 (essential).
