HLC (Higher Learning Commission) accreditation is a peer-review process. HLC pulled together an accreditation team for SVSU consisting of people from other four year institutions much like SVSU. The accreditation team visited the campus April 7-9, 2014, after having read SVSU’s self-study report and examining the supporting evidence that SVSU had assembled over the past two years. The self-study report and the HLC team’s evaluation will address our work in five broad areas marked as HLC Criteria: Criterion One: Institutional Mission; Criterion Two: Ethical/Responsible Conduct; Criterion Three: Teaching and Learning- Quality, Resources and Support; Criterion Four: Teaching and Learning-Evaluation and Improvement; Criterion Five: Resources, Planning and Institutional Effectiveness.
HLC visitors saw for themselves—through modes ranging from formal interviews to informal “stop and chats” with random students, faculty, and staff—that we are doing what our self-study says we are doing.
Once completed, the HLC site review team will make its formal recommendation to the HLC Board of Trustees, which will make the final decision regarding our affirmation of accreditation. This decision is usually received about 6 months following the visit.
