Why become an English major?

‌The skills, knowledge, and understanding acquired through the English major are excellent preparation for careers in education, law, business, medicine, government, journalism, editing, publishing and many others.

The study of language and literature provides students with an opportunity to develop a better understanding of themselves and the world around them. Through courses that range from classic literature to contemporary fiction and literary theory, students can acquire the skills necessary for effective use of language and for analyzing issues important to individuals and society. These courses offer a foundation for effective interpersonal communication as well as an understanding of culture and history that is needed today; the study of literature empowers students to participate as critical thinkers in the public discourse of our time.

Student Opportunities

  • Many literature majors contribute to SVSU’s weekly newspaper, The Valley Vanguard, and the campus' semi-annual literary magazine, Cardinal Sins.
  • Recent capstone courses for seniors have examined such diverse topics as performance studies and the theory and practice of textual editing.
  • Many literature majors also acquire valuable experience by working as tutors in the campus Writing Center.
