Admission Requirements

Teacher Education - Secondary Education 6-12

Those interested in seeking a teaching certificate in Secondary Education, who have earned a Bachelor's degree or higher, must choose a major and a minor from the list below:

Majors
Biology, Chemistry, English, French 6-12 and K-12, History, Industrial Technology, Integrated Science*, Mathematics, Music K-12 (no minor required), Physical Education 6-12 and K-12, Physics, Social Studies, Spanish 6-12 and K-12, Special Education (Cognitive Impairments, Emotional Impairments, Autism Spectrum Disorder), Speech (Communication and Theatre), Visual Arts K-12 (no minor required)

Minors
Biology, Chemistry, Computer Science, Economics, English, English as a Second Language, French, German, Geography, History, Mathematics, Physical Education, Physics, Political Science, Spanish, Speech (Communication & Theatre)

The planned program is in the course catalog established by the College of Education for completing General Education requirements, Basic Skills requirements and approved majors and minors for teachers. As a result, the application process is accomplished in two-steps:

STEP 1 - Before you can apply for admission to the Teacher Education program, you must be admitted to the University. If you have not applied and been admitted to the University, please visit www.svsu.edu/apply.

STEP 2 - Pre-Secondary Education students are urged to attend a Pre-Education Seminar prior to admission to the Teacher Education Program (TEP).

STEP 3 - Students must apply and be accepted into the teacher education program prior to enrollment in 300-level professional studies courses. The requirements listed below must be completed or in progress for application to the teacher education program. The following must be successfully completed prior to filing an application with the College of Education:

• All Basic Skills requirements
• GPA of 2.75 minimum (based on 4.00 scale) for the most recent 60 credit hours
• Passing scores on the Michigan Test for Teacher Certification (MTTC) Basic Skills Test
• The following may be in progress when filing an application with the College of Education, but must successfully be completed by the end of winter semester for fall admission, or the end of fall semester for winter admission:
  » Psychology 100 with a grade of “C” or better.
  » Teacher Education 100 with a grade of “C” or better.
  » 15 credits in the major and nine credits in minor (Secondary majors only).
