NoDoz poses health risks

It's that time of year again when midterms for most courses offered at SVSU are rearing their ugly heads. These relentless examinations usually mean sleepless nights for many students.

As a means of pushing through these nights that would otherwise leave them extremely exhausted and ill prepared for their exams, what do they do? They say, "I know, I'll take a NoDoz!" Every time I hear a friend say they are going to take a NoDoz, I cringe. Why would anyone want to harm his or her body in such a disparaging manner? A NoDoz gives an immediate shock to your central nervous system. In effect, it is similar to slapping yourself in the face, only worse.

Now, I understand that there are many things on this Earth that aren't good for you, but at the same time, I understand that things need to be done in moderation and balance. If you want a piece of chocolate, you're not going to go and eat three whole chocolate cakes, are you? In effect, NoDoz is like drinking two or three cups of coffee - instantly.

My plea to students is to realize how much you're really hurting your body when you buy that bottle from the store and then swallow that pill; you should realize that there are better methods to staying awake late at night. I hope that the next time you go to the store late at night to purchase an item to assist in keeping you awake that you look at the NoDoz and instead think "No Dose.”
