After high school,
Mat enlisted in the U.S. Navy and completed training as a Hospital
Corpsman. During his five years of service his studies included:
anatomy and physiology, pharmacology, battlefield medicine, foreign
shore hospital training, diseases and diagnoses, basic life support
and fitness & nutrition. On the job, he was able to accomplish
many medical activities including immunizations, stitching, pharmacy,
reading of X-Rays, bandaging and swathing and triage.
In 1997, he was called to Michigan State University
for a meningitis breakout. He and five others vaccinated more than
50,000 staff and students in four days. For this achievement, he
was awarded his first Navy Achievement Medal. His second was awarded
for the achievements of his five year career at Great Lakes Naval
Hospital. He also was awarded the Good Conduct Medal and several
others. After his service was completed, Mat was honorably discharged
and he moved back to his home state in Michigan. He returned to
school at SVSU where he is working towards a goal of becoming a
nurse anesthesiologist. He accepted the vacant job of Strength and
Conditioning Coach for women's tennis in 2003.
