BREEZE BY TIMBERWOLVES, 71-39, BEHIND HAGSTROM'S 17 POINTS
MIDLAND, Mich. - Head Coach Kim Chandler's ballclub jumped on
Northwood early and kept up the defensive pressure all game in
a 71-39 win over the Timberwolves on Wednesday night at the Bennett
Sports Center. SVSU broke the game open with a 16-4 run over a
four-minute span in the first half to take a 27-10 lead with 6:22
to go in the opening period. Sophomore Valerie Smith
(Owosso, Mich.) tortured her former club with three first-half
triples in building the 17-point cushion. Smith ended with 15
points (5-of-8 3FG), five rebounds, three blocks and four steals
in 29 minutes. SVSU held a 37-17 halftime advantage and held NU
to 25.0 percent first-half shooting. SVSU shot 50.0 percent in
the first half and made 4-of-10 three's. NU's 39 total points
was the least allowed this season in a GLIAC game. NU committed
26 turnovers and the Cardinals had 18 points off those miscues.
The Cardinals also put up 30 points in the paint with junior Jennifer
Hagstrom (Cadillac, Mich.) doing most of the
damage. She finished with a game-high 17 points and also blocked
five shots. She was 8-of-13 from the floor in 33 minutes. Senior
Jennifer Brogger (Harbor Springs, Mich.)
scored 13 points and needs eight points for 1,000 points in her
career. SVSU finished the game shooting 48.3 percent and 46.7
percent from the arc. The Cardinals improve to 15-7, 7-6 in the
GLIAC after sweeping the season series with Northwood.
