Cardinals Beaten at Tech

HOUGHTON -- No. 16-ranked Michigan Tech University's remained in a tie for first place in the GLIAC North Division after beating Saginaw Valley State University 70-51 Thursday night in the Student Development Complex.
The Lady Cardinals matched a dubious school record with their sixth straight loss and has lost 11 straight in Houghton, while the Huskies notched their seventh straight win.
SVSU battled their hosts in the first half, but fell behind by 15 points late in the period before the Huskies settled for a 37-26 halftime lead.
Tech built a 22-point lead, 57-35 with 10:57 left in the game, essentially deciding the outcome. Neither team scored for the next three-and-a-half minutes and a 9-2 Cardinal run pulled them within 13 points with 5:24 left. The Huskies scored the next seven points and cruised to the win.
Jill Herbig (Hamilton) led SVSU with 22 points, while Andrea Jones (Swartz Creek) added 14. SVSU sophomore Jenny White (Oxford) grabbed a career-high 13 rebounds to force a 36-36 stalemate on the backboards.
Clara Goggins and Allison Bailey led MTU with 14 and 13 points, respectively.
"We played extremely hard and played much better defensively," said second-year Cardinal Coach Lori Flaherty. "We also did a much better job on the boards than we have in the last couple games."
The Huskies improved to 12-2 in the league and 17-4 overall, while SVSU fell to 8-13 overall and 4-10 in the GLIAC.
SVSU, which plays at No. 13-ranked Northern Michigan University Saturday, needs to win its final five games to avoid just the second losing record in the history of the program.
