Joe Vogl
was promoted to athletic director on May 7, 2004. He has been at
SVSU in some capacity since 1972.
He served the 13 years as head coach of the highly-successful
golf program at SVSU after 13 seasons as assistant and four on the
squad.
Vogl earned 11 letters in five sports as a prep
at Owosso St. Paul High School, including letters in football, basketball,
baseball, track, and golf as a senior.
After graduating in 1971, the all-state prep
linebacker enrolled at Ferris State, but an injury cut his career
short. He transferred to SVSU and led the Cardinal golf team to
three GLIAC titles and three NAIA national tournaments. He has one
of the three hole-in-ones in SVSU history, when he scored an ace
on the 4th hole at the Rackham Golf Course in 1975. A two-time All-GLIAC
and All-District selection, Vogl served as captain his senior year,
leading SVSU to a 13th place finish at the national tournament.
SVSU competed in the NAIA nationals 13 times
while Vogl served as assistant coach. When the Cardinals left the
NAIA to become exclusively affiliated with NCAA, Vogl took over
as head coach and has led SVSU to GLIAC titles in 1996 and 1998.
He was named the league's "Coach of the Year" in 1993, 1996 and
1998.
Vogl guided the Cardinals to back-to-back NCAA
national tournament appearances in 1997 and 1998.
He is currently chairman of the District IV golf
coaches committee, a member of the USGA, and a board member of the
Kawkawlin River Association. He has played in several Michigan Amateur
Championships. Vogl is also a member of the Coach of the Year award
committee.
Vogl earned his BBA at SVSU in 1976 and his MBA
in 1982.
Born in Owosso on March 18, 1953, he and his
wife, Susan, have twin 12-year-old sons Dustin and Drew. |
